Morning blaze kills 2 horses

CLEARFIELD TWP — Two horses were killed early this morning when the barn at a farm on Schiebel Road burned down.

Chief Rob McLafferty of the Herman Volunteer Fire Company said the roughly 48-foot-by-40-foot barn at 181 Schiebel Road was destroyed.

McLafferty said owner Dan Toomey spotted the flames engulfing the barn, but it was too late to save the horses.

“It was fully involved,” McLafferty said.

He said crews were delayed fighting the blaze because a Central Electric power line fell across the road and onto the barn.

While firefighters were able to drive in another way, they had to wait for the power company to shut off the electricity before spraying the barn.

“We were delayed,” McLafferty said.

He said the fire was doused in a couple minutes.

He said there was no way to determine a cause.

“There was too much damage,” he said.

McLafferty said there was no danger to Dan and Becky Toomey’s residence, which is a couple hundred yards away from the barn.

Some equipment and a saddle also were lost in the fire. The couple is insured.

More than 20 firefighters responded to the 3:10 a.m. 911 call. The Saxonburg and East Butler volunteer fire departments assisted Herman.

Crews cleared the scene at 5:39 a.m.
