SRU student charged in groping incident

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — State police Thursday charged a Slippery Rock University student with groping another student last month during a party at an off-campus apartment complex.

Justin A. Barber, 20, of Slippery Rock is accused of grabbing the woman’s breasts and groin about 2 a.m. Feb. 2 at the alleged victim’s home at The Heights on Woodbridge Drive.

Police were called to the complex after apartment security officers responded for a fight between college students, according to court documents.

The fight came after Barber allegedly fondled the woman who lives there, police said. The Butler Eagle is not identifying her due to the nature of the charges.

A friend of the woman saw the suspected abuse and pulled the defendant away from the accuser.

The alleged victim texted her boyfriend, telling him that Barber was trying to “rape” her, documents said.

The boyfriend got to the apartment a short time later and confronted Barber. Security was called and broke up the altercation.

But outside the apartment, police said, Barber exposed himself to the woman and other party-goers.

Troopers spoke to Barber, who denied any wrongdoing, police said. They said he appeared “highly intoxicated.”

Barber is charged with indecent assault, indecent exposure, disorderly conduct and open lewdness, all misdemeanors. He also faces summary charges of public drunkenness and underage drinking.
