BUTLER TWP — Electronic cigarettes are now banned from the Butler County Community College campus and its four satellite facilities.

BC3 trustees approved the revision in their tobacco-free campus ordinance at their meeting on Wednesday afternoon to include electronic cigarettes. The devices are ban throughout campus, indoors and outdoors, and the provision is effective immediately.

Those violating the ordinance will first be given a verbal warning; subsequent violations will warrant a fine.

The ordinance also applies to BC3 facilities at Lawrence Crossing, Cranberry, Brockway and Linden Pointe.

PINE TWP, Mercer County — A quarter-mile section of Route 173 will be closed for several months as the state Department of Transportation replaces an 81-year-old bridge over Swamp Run.The 42-foot-long bridge is a little more than a mile south of the intersection with Route 58 and about five miles north of the intersection with Route 108.The bridge is expected to close March 31, and construction work is expected to be done by October.During construction, a detour will be posted using Route 58, Route 8 and Route 108.Nearly 5,200 vehicles use the bridge every day.The cost of the project is about $1.3 million, which is to be paid entirely with federal funds.

JACKSON TWP — Work will begin next week on Route 528 near the park -and-ride lot.The project includes widening Route 528 to create a left-turn lane onto Interstate 79 for motorists traveling south, and a turn lane into the park-and-ride lot for motorists heading north.Milling and paving operations will occur from the entrance to I-79 near Route 19 to just past the park-and -ride lot.The project is expected to be completed in early June.
