Cranberry man gets prison time for DUI

A Cranberry Township man was sentenced Thursday to spend 9 to 18 months in prison followed by 4½ years of probation for driving under the influence after he was stopped at a DUI checkpoint in September.

Police said James Paul Andrews, 26, of Dover Drive showed signs of intoxication at the checkpoint on Route 19 in Cranberry Township.

Andrews refused to submit to a blood test and was arrested for DUI. He also got a ticket for driving without a license.

While police were getting his information, Andrews tried to stare down a police dog, then he reportedly barked, hissed and growled. The dog, Chaos, became agitated and barked back.

Andrews pleaded guilty to drunken driving and disorderly conduct. A charge of driving without a license was dismissed, as was a more serious charge of taunting a police animal, as part of Andrews’ plea agreement with the Butler County District Attorney’s Office.

The defendant made no agreement with prosecutors about the terms of his sentence, and that was fashioned by county Judge William Shaffer.

Besides his prison time, Andrews also was fined $1,500 and ordered to perform 60 hours of community service.
