Voters offered lots of choices for governor
Republicans will have two choices and Democrats will have six choices for gubernatorial candidates in the May 20 primary.
Incumbent Republican Gov. Tom Corbett of Allegheny County will face challenger Bob Guzzardi, a Montgomery County businessman.
The six Democratic candidates are former state Department of Environmental Protection Secretary John Hanger of Dauphin County; state Treasurer Rob McCord of Montgomery County; former DEP Secretary Katie McGinty of Chester County; U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz of Montgomery County; former Auditor General Jack Wagner of Allegheny County; and former state Revenue Secretary Tom Wolf of York County.
Candidates for all offices had to file nominating petitions by Tuesday. Candidates for governor had to collect 2,000 signatures, including more than 100 each in at least 10 counties.
Lebanon County Commissioner Jo Ellen Litz was unable to file nominating petitions and dropped out of the race on Tuesday.
Georgiann Kerr, chairman of the Butler County Democratic Committee, said that the gubernatorial race is shaping up to be exciting.
“They’re all very well qualified,” Kerr said.
Ed Natali, chairman of the county Republican Committee, said the committee is working to get Corbett to come to the county during the summer.
In the 3rd Congressional District race, incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly of Butler has no primary opponent.
On the Democratic side, Dan LaVallee of Cranberry Township will face Mel Marin of Sharon, Mercer County. LaVallee announced his intention to run in February. Marin, who ran in 2010 and 2012, made no campaign announcement.
Kerr said she has had no contact with Marin.
Six Democrats will appear on the ballot for lieutenant governor.
They are state Rep. Brandon Neuman of Washington County; former U.S. Congressman Mark Critz of Cambria County; Harrisburg City Councilman Brad Koplinski; Jay Paterno of Centre County, the son of former Penn State University football coach Joe Paterno and executive director of the nonprofit Nets4Nets; state Sen. Mike Stack of Philadelphia County; and Bradford County Commissioner Mark Smith.
Brenda Alton, a former adviser to the Harrisburg mayor, failed to file petitions on time.
Incumbent Republican Lt. Gov. Jim Cawley of Bucks County is running unopposed on the primary ballot.
Incumbent state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-12th, of Cranberry Township will face opponent Gordon Marburger of Adams Township. Lisa Zucco of Cranberry Township is running unopposed for the 12th District seat on the Democratic side.
Three Republicans will face each other to replace retiring state Rep. Dick Stevenson, R-8th of Grove City.
Tedd Nesbit of Grove City, Jeffrey Black of Grove City and Herman Bauer of Franklin Township will run for their party’s nomination for that seat.
Natali said the county committee does not endorse candidates, but he said all of the candidates are excellent.
“With all contested races, the candidates still have a lot of work ahead of them,” Natali said.
He said the committee is working to hold debates for Republican candidates for the 8th and 12th district races.
No Democrats are running for the 8th District, but Kerr said there possibly will be a write-in candidate.
Additionally, state Rep. Jaret Gibbons, D-10th, Rep. Brian Ellis, R-11th, Rep. R. Lee James, R-64th, Rep. Jim Marshall, R-14th, and Rep. Jeff Pyle, R-60th, are running unopposed.
