City man beaten, robbed near home

Attack happened around midnight

Four unknown men ambushed another man and stole his wallet early this morning, Butler police said.

The mugging left the 33-year-old victim bloodied and in need of medical treatment.

The man told officers that he was walking north on South Chestnut Street, where he lives, shortly after midnight. He decided to cut through the parking lot of the C.W. Howard Insurance Agency in the 400 block of West Jefferson Street.

Before he knew it, according to police, he was “jumped” from behind. Although he was unable to get a good look at his attackers, he said he believed they were all white and in their early-20s. He counted four assailants.

Police said the victim related that the suspects were “hitting and kicking” him and grabbed his wallet.

But after finding no money inside, one of the robbers threw the wallet back at the man, the report said. The suspects fled and were last seen headed west on Birch Street.

The victim made it to the A-Plus/Sunoco, where a store employee called for help about 12:15 a.m.

A Butler Ambulance Service crew treated the man for a bleeding facial cut. He was later taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

Police searched the area but were unable to find any of the suspects.

Anyone with information about the apparent robbery is asked to call police at 724-287-7743.
