Three Latin students at Butler Senior High School received awards that are based on their test results in the classical language.

Brandon Fisher and David Schummer, both seniors, received gold awards on the National Classical Etymology Examination. Emily Feczko, a junior, received a silver award.

The ranks are based on a percentile that changes from year to year. According to the exam website, 600 students in 11th and 12th grades nationally took the test last year.

Linda Russell and James Kasparek run the Latin program at the school.

Elizabeth Ford of Slippery Rock was part of the Muskingum University debate team that won the state championship at the Ohio Forensics Association State Novice and Interstate Individual Events Tournament. Ten universities and colleges participated in the tournament.

She earned honors as an individual parliamentary debate speaker and she earned third place in Trithon, sixth place in persuasion and second place in poetry.

Fordalso will participate in the Muskingum University Concert Choir and Wind Ensemble Spring Tour. The tour will visit four states in 11 days, culminating on Muskingum’s campus in New Concord, Ohio.

The following Saint Joseph High School students received awards at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Region 7 meeting:

First place: Claire Preston and Jacob Surkosky, both of Butler, and Holly Wolfe of Sarver

Second place: Allie Hartle and Catherine Simms, both of Butler

First place winners advance to the state competition in May.

The Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation selected five college freshmen as the recipients of $1,000 Amerikohl Mining scholarships in memory of Bruno Muscatello.

The students are graduates of Butler High School’s College Tech Prep Program and are pursing careers in science, engineering or other technical fields.

The five students are:

Melisa Stoner is majoring in nursing at Butler County Community College. She is the daughter of Ronald and Sandra Stoner of Butler.

Zachary Neudorfer is majoring in electrical engineering at Penn State University, Behrend Campus. He is the son of John and Kim Neudorfer of Butler.

Ashley Shaw is majoring in biology at Slippery Rock University. She is the daughter of Tammy Shaw of Fenelton.

Christin Barron is majoring in nursing at Butler County Community College. She is the daughter of Thomas and Sandra Barron of Chicora.

Joshua DiPippa is majoring in exercise science at Slippery Rock University. He is the son of Matthew and Jacki DiPippa of Renfrew.
