CLAY TWP — A Boyers woman escaped serious injury this morning but her car was totaled when it slammed into the back of a snow plow truck and burst into flames, authorities said.

The collision about 6:50 a.m. spilled about two tons of salt and anti-skid material onto Route 308 and closed a portion of the road for more than 90 minutes.

The car was destroyed and the PennDOT plow truck was damaged, said Chief Reid Campbell of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department.

An accident report was not immediately available.

Campbell said the truck was on plow duty when its driver stopped in the southbound lane on Route 308, about one-half mile north of West Sunbury. The driver apparently stopped to raise the truck bed and shift the load of salt and anti-skid to the rear of the vehicle.

The woman in the car rear-ended the truck, which had its hazard lights on, Campbell said.

“She said she didn’t know the truck was stopped,” Campbell said.

The engine and front passenger compartments caught fire.

The woman, who suffered minor injuries in the crash, got out on her own.

A medical crew treated her at the scene. The woman’s mother arrived and took her to a hospital for further treatment.

West Sunbury firefighters had to put out the fire coming from the car.

The truck driver was not hurt, but the salt spreader in back was damaged.
