Nearhoof lifts Mars

Planet guard scores 19 in victory over Freeport

Owen Nearhoof continued his torrid start this season with 19 points — 12 coming in the first half — as Mars downed Freeport 63-45 in high school basketball action Friday night.

John Castello added 13 points and Ethan Lewis 12 for the Planets (4-2, 2-0).

Freeport (3-3, 1-2) was led by Eric Davis’ 13 points.

Girls Basketball

Stephanie McCall scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds Friday night as Moniteau (4-2, 2-0 in the KSAC) won at previously unbeaten Redbank Valley, 45-38.

Fontaine Glenn added 11 points for the Warriors while Emily Rider scored 10.

Brooke Hinderliter paced Redbank with 12 points. She averages more than 20 per game.

“Our freshman, Alazia Greaves, did a great job defending her,” Moniteau coach Matt Stebbins said. “Stephanie helped out there, too. Hinderliter only scored four points in the second half.

“We locked her down.”

Upper St. Clair 1, Seneca Valley 0 — Tanner Pfeffer made 21 saves, but the Raiders fell on a power-play goal by Kasey Colcombe with less than a minute to play in the third period.
