Barclay, Packers making push

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Packers are on the outside looking in when it comes to the NFL playoffs.

But Don Barclay and his teammates are looking to change that.

The Seneca Valley High School graduate is the starting right tackle for Green Bay (7-6-1), which plays Pittsburgh at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

The Packers’ playoff chances received a boost last week with a dramatic 37-36 comeback victory in Dallas. Green Bay trailed 26-3 at halftime and 29-10 late in the third quarter. Barclay helped the team’s offense score two touchdowns in a span of two minutes and 46 seconds late in the final period.

“There wasn’t any doubt in my mind we still had a chance to win,” Barclay said of his mindset at halftime. “At that point, we were just focused on coming out and putting a scoring drive together at the start of the third quarter. We accomplished that and just took things from there.

“It was one of the best comebacks I’ve ever been a part of.”

With the win, Green Bay is still alive for an NFC North Division title. The Packers are currently a half game behind division-leading Chicago (8-6), but there’s little room for error as Green Bay prepares to take on the Steelers.

“We have a playoff mindset,” said Barclay, who is 6-foot-4, 305 pounds. “We aren’t focused on what other teams are doing. We need to take care of our own business. If we do that, we’ll see where we stand.”

Pittsburgh’s defense has several playmakers, but has also given up a lot of big plays this season.

“They do a great job of disguising what they are doing,” Barclay said. “They like to bring pressure from different directions, but as long as we communicate, we should be fine.”

The biggest question surrounding Sunday’s game is who will start at quarterback for the Packers. All-Pro signal caller Aaron Rodgers is still on the mend after injuring his collarbone Nov. 4 against Chicago. Rodgers, who has missed six games, practiced in a limited capacity Wednesday. His backup, Matt Flynn, passed for 299 yards and four touchdowns in Green Bay’s win over the Cowboys.

“Matt did a great job,” said Barclay. “His timing was down and he made some throws into small windows. That said, Aaron has great arm strength. He is one of the best quarterbacks in the league and you can’t take that away from him.”

After making the team as an undrafted free agent in 2012, Barclay began starting at right tackle late last season, including two playoff games. Other than a two-game stretch last month during which he was out with a sprained knee, he has been reliable at that position again this season, making 12 starts.

“The experience I got last year really helped,” he said. “Just learning the speed of the game and getting a feel for everything, like facing 3-4 defenses and four-man fronts.

“As a unit, I think we’ve done a better job of run blocking this year,” said Barclay, “but a lot of the credit goes to (running backs) Eddie Lacy and James Starks.”

Barclay and his wife, Brea, live in Green Bay.
