Butler bows to P-R, 9-5
VALENCIA — If you like defensive hockey, look away.
Defense was hard to come by at Ice Connection late Monday night.
Both the Butler and Pine-Richland hockey teams lit the lamp often. But a late scoring binge by the Rams late in the third period finished off the Golden Tornado 9-5.
Pine-Richland (3-3) scored five goals in the third period, including three in a two minute span to blow open a game that was tight throughout.
“Even looking at the score, I don't think anyone is going to doubt we are a very difficult team to play against,” said Butler coach Mike Guentner. “Sometimes the pucks don't go your way. Unfortunately, it just wasn't our night.”
Butler had a very uncharacteristic night, in fact.
Coming into the game, the Golden Tornado had given up just 18 goals in five games and tallied just 77 penalty minutes.
Butler was poor in both categories against the Rams, giving up the nine goals to go with 32 penalty minutes.
The penalties led to five power play goals for Pine-Richland.
“That's not our gameplan,” Guentner said. “Usually we like to get a lead and defend it. We didn't do that.
“Not much to say about the penalties,” Guentner added. “We have been a very disciplined team. This is kind of an anomaly. It's kind of back to the drawing board as far as discipline goes. That's going to happen when you give up that many odd-man breaks and that many penalties against. You're not going to win many games.”
Butler jumped out 1-0 on the strength of a goal from Connor Scott.
But Pine-Richland answered with a pair of goals to take the lead 2-1.
The teams then traded goals until Ryan Cole put Pine-Richland up 6-4.
Butler closed the gap to 6-5 off a goal from Joe DiMartino, but then the wheels came off for the Golden Tornado.
Scott scored a pair of goals and Nick Whann had three assists for Butler.
Tanner Chuba and Jonathan Fair also scored goals for the Tornado.
Nick Matelan had four goals to pace Pine-Richland.
“We're starting to figure out our own identity,” said Rams coach Mike Bagnato. “We weren't sure where we were at and we were looking for guys to step up. We had a lot of guys step up tonight.”
Butler was also hurt by the loss of captain Troy Double, who took a puck off the shin and had to be carried off the ice.
Guentner said Double's injury wasn't serious.
“He's going to be OK,” Guentner said. “He's just going to have a pretty big bruise.”
Guentner is hoping his team's confidence doesn't take a big contusion. He doesn't think his gritty team will lose focus.
“Connor had two goals tonight, but he is upset we lost,” Guentner said. “To a man, these guys know it doesn't matter if the team loses. We changed the culture. It went from individual-based to team-based. We want to be gritty and difficult to play against.”
