Mars board honors his work

Pettigrew

ADAMS TWP — In an emotional roll-call vote, the Mars School Board on Monday unanimously declared Thursday “Dr. Pettigrew Day” in the school district.

Board President Dayle Ferguson announced that the school board meeting was Superintendent William Pettigrew’s final one after 26 years at the district. He will officially retire Dec. 1.

To Pettigrew’s surprise, Ferguson declared the special day through a resolution that was drafted by the board that:

n Honors Pettigrew for his service to the students, staff, and the community

n Recognizes Pettigrew for his leadership and lasting contributions to the growing district’s academic and athletic/co-curricular programs and efficient management

n Recognizes that Pettigrew has earned the admiration and respect of the board, his administrative team and fellow educators for his commitment to student achievement, fiscal responsibility and professional mentoring as well as for his “hallmark” leadership style

n Acknowledges Pettigrew’s advocacy on behalf of quality public education and all the students it serves.

After the seven board members present voted “aye” to approve the resolution, Ferguson announced a series of events that will occur.

She said Thursday’s lunch in each building will be meatloaf, which is Pettigrew’s favorite meal. She said Nutrition Inc., the district’s food service company, also will provide students with a free “Pettigrew Pretzel” during their lunches.

Ferguson said a message recorded by Pettigrew will be played during each building’s morning announcements.

“Although you were a hostile participant,” Ferguson said of the recording.

New Superintendent Jim Budzilek said Blue and Gold Day on Thursday will be celebrated in each of the district’s five school buildings, in which students are encouraged to wear the school colors. He also said the teachers and staff may wear blue jeans on Dr. Pettigrew Day.

Ferguson said Pettigrew will be escorted to each building, where he can bid farewell to principals, staff and students.

In May the board voted to name the new driveway between Three Degree Road and the elementary school “Doc’s Way” as a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Pettigrew’s self-assured management style.

“Well, first I have a driveway named after me, and now a pretzel,” Pettigrew said. “That really takes it to the top.”

Becoming serious, Pettigrew said he appreciated the board’s thoughtfulness approving the resolution.

“I am very, very touched that these people would take that time and effort to recognize me,” he said.

Pettigrew hearkened back on his long career at Mars, which included almost constant growth in the district. He also commented on the many school boards he has taken direction from over more than two decades, and referred to the “hallmark” leadership style mentioned in the resolution.

“I always liked the arguments and consternation over the years, and it was always fun coming to work,” he said.

Board Vice President Rebecca Brown, who, along with Bonnie Weaver, is the longest-serving member of the board, called Pettigrew “the plus-one to our nine” board members in thanking Pettigrew for his work at Mars.

“During my years on the board, I have had the opportunity to observe your many talents in action, to appreciate your vast knowledge of the diverse issues in education, and to admire your efficient abilities in decision-making,” Brown said.

She read a quote proposing that efficient management is more than climbing the ladder of success; it’s knowing whether the ladder leans against the correct wall.

“Thank you for successfully and efficiently managing all aspects of the Mars School District,” Brown said, “but most of all, thank you for leaning the ladder and leading Mars up the right wall.”

Laurie Dufford, president of the Mars Area Education Support Personnel Association, spent much of the past year in union negotiations with the district. Pettigrew was present at the negotiating sessions. The district and union came to an agreement in late June.

“It’s been a pleasure working with you and getting to know you over the past year,” Dufford said. “It’s been fun.”

Chris Petrini, an elementary school teacher who represents the teachers union at each school board meeting, also wished Pettigrew the best in his retirement.

With her voice breaking, Ferguson shared the thoughts of all those who respect Pettigrew.

“As you drive around the district, I hope you know all the people, programs and properties, you touched,” Ferguson said. “It’s been fun and a real pleasure to work with you.”
