Grove City football bows to Thomas More, 44-7
The Grove City College football team suffered a 44-7 setback to Thomas More on Saturday afternoon in a Presidents' Athletic Conference clash at Bank of Kentucky Field.
The Wolverines (3-4, 1-4) took a 7-3 lead with eight minutes left in the first quarter off a 53-yard touchdown pass from Brian Pell to Anthony Ritchie.
The Saints lead was only 16-7 at half, but the advantage stretched significantly from there.
Pell was 11-of-24 for 119 yards, while Ritchie hauled in six passes for 94 yards. Steve Maskrey led Grove City on the ground with 48 yards on 14 carries.
The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team clinched a PSAC playoff berth by edging West Chester 1-0 on Saturday.It's the seventh consecutive victory for The Rock (11-2-1, 10-2-1), which is ranked 15th in the nation.Allison Harbart scored the lone goal of the match in the 65th minute of play.Dana O'Neill recorded the shutout at keeper with two saves.SRU had a 3-2 edge in shots on goal and each team was awarded two corner kicks.
West Chester scored two first-half goals and held on for a 2-1 win over Slippery Rock University on Saturday.The loss drops The Rock, ranked 23rd in the nation, to 11-3-1 overall and 6-3 in PSAC play.Declan Brennan scored for SRU in the 43rd minute off a throw-in from Joshua Gray to cut the deficit in half, but The Rock couldn't complete the comeback.Chris Zier tallied 10 saves for Slippery Rock, which had a 12-3 disadvantage in shots on goal and 18-12 in total shots.
The Slippery Rock University women's volleyball team dropped to the cellar of the PSAC West after a straight-set loss to Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday.SRU was defeated by margins of 25-21, 25-14 and 25-23 en route to its seventh straight loss.Kristy Lake recorded a team-high seven kills, Michelle Hren had six and Caroline Houston tallied five. Janna Reilly led SRU with 16 assists, while Kayla Woo had 14 digs.
Morgan Elliott and Alex Koksal earned All-PSAC honors on Saturday, leading Slippery Rock University to a fifth-place finish at the PSAC Championships at Kutztown University.Elliott finished ninth place, completing the 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes, 55 seconds. Koksal got 12th place at 26:03.Slippery Rock High grad Ryan Thompson finished 60th among 125 runners with a time of 27:37.Lock Haven won the men's team title.The SRU women's cross country team placed sixth at the PSAC Championships, while Mansfield hauled in its first team title.Janine Powis earned all-conference honors for the first time in her career with a 20-place finish at 23:05. Kara Styles wasn't far behind and took 24th with a time of 23:16.The SRU cross country teams will partake in the Atlantic Regional Championships Nov. 9 at Lock Haven University.
