Six area students recently were awarded up to $10,000 each in scholarships for the 2013-14 school year from the II-VI Foundation in Saxonburg.

Paul Kletzli of Butler is a senior at York College of Pennsylvania and is pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering.

Gavin Lachesky of Butler is a senior in aerospace engineering at Purdue University.

Peter Schramm of Butler is a senior studying mechanical engineering at the Catholic University of America.

Brandon Saber of Saxonburg is studying physics/engineering as a senior at Westminster College.

Kletzli, Lachesky, Schramm and Saber are repeat recipients of II-VI Foundation scholarships having continued their record of excellence in academics, work and behavior.

Joseph Hutchinson of Saxonburg is a freshman studying engineering at Penn State Behrend.

Sara Mills of Cabot is a sophomore in the chemistry program at Mercyhurst.

The II-VI Foundation awarded $516,100 in scholarships to students nationwide. The II-VI Foundation Scholarship Program encourages and enables student scholars to pursue postsecondary education in engineering, mathematics and science. Scholarship recipients may reapply each year for a maximum of four years.

The Slippery Rock High School “Rocket” Marching Band and the Karns City High School Marching Band will compete in the 2013 Tournament of Bands Chapter 8 Championship.

The Slippery Rock band will host the event in cooperation with the Butler “Golden Tornado” Marching Band at 5 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Butler High School stadium. Beginning at 4 p.m., tickets will be available at the door.

Thirteen Western Pennsylvania bands will compete. The event ends the season of competition and determines the bands that will compete at the All Chapter Championship in Harrisburg in November.

There also will be exhibition performances by Butler High School and the Slippery Rock University marching band. The night will end with “Battle Hymn of the Republic” performed by more than 1,000 musicians.
