Caroline Simms, 12, of Butler received a $1,000 scholarship for higher education from the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program. She was one of 200 youth volunteers receiving the scholarship out of 35,000 nominees nationwide.
The winners have made a positive impact in their communities and were chosen based on initiative, leadership, generosity and project benefits.
After being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, Caroline raised more than $7,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation by collecting donations for a special event and fundraising for a team she leads at the organization’s annual walk.

Emily Grecco was the winner of an essay contest sponsored by the Butler Township Board of Commissioners as part of Local Government Week. In the essays, contestants explained how they plan to participate in government as they grow older.
The Butler Senior High School graduate will attend Duquesne University’s Honors College in the fall, where she will study secondary social studies education.

Michael Kennedy, a senior at Knoch High School, is one of 98 students nationwide chosen to attend the American Legion Boys Nation at Marymount University in Arlington, Va. He was selected based on leadership skills, academic record and activity at the American Legion Boys State.
The American Legion Boys Nation program introduces students to the federal government through lectures and forums and through visits to federal agencies and institutions in the Washington, D.C., area.
