Christopher Znosko

Christopher Znosko of East Brady recently became a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. The organization is the nation’s only interdisciplinary honors organization for first- and second- year college students.

Znosko attends the University of Akron and is studying corrosion engineering.

Jordan Harvey, a senior mathematics (secondary education) major from Butler, delivered the valedictory during commencement at Waynesburg University.

While at the university, Harvey, a Leadership Scholar, served as a campus Christian ministry assistant, lead Bible studies in the residence halls and tutored others in mathematics.

Before fall, Harvey hopes to teach high school math at Evangel Heights Christian Academy, where she attended high school.

Blair Patterson, a public relations and writing major from Cabot, has been named the editor-in-chief of The Source, the student newspaper at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, for the 2013-14 academic year.

Previously, Patterson served as a radio operator in the U.S. Marine Corps. His tour of duty included a seven-month deployment to Afghanistan. He is also the incoming president of Delta Omega Phi fraternity.

Christopher Main of Fombell and Chelsea McKiernan of Butler recently received awards from Bucknell University.

Main received departmental honors in computer science and the Bucknell Prize in Computer Science. He is a 2009 graduate of Riverside High School and the son of William and Mary Main of Fombell.

McKiernan received the Ernest and Josephine Christensen Award for outstanding graduate in engineering and the Bucknell Prize in Biomedical Engineering. She is a 2009 graduate of Mars High School and the daughter of Kevin and Kimberly McKiernan of Butler.

Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, awarded summer research fellowships to several area students. The students are listed below with their research topics:

Brittany Martinelli of Mars, “An Examination of Service Quality Metrics in Erie-Area Hospitals”

Katelyn Marsh of Emlenton, “Interpretation of Language Across Cultures”

Matthew Lachesky of Butler, “Hypergeometric Relations for the Classical Jacobi Polynomials”

Amanda Stetz of Mars, “Examining the Role of the Heme Redox Potential and its Effect on Myoglobin as a Nitrite Reductase.”

Brad Mockenhaupt, a first-grade student at Holy Sepulcher Roman Catholic School in Butler, won the first/second grade category in the ninth annual national Paralyzed Veterans of America Poster and Essay Contest.

Brad is the son of Eric and Meredith Mockenhaupt of Evans City.

With their submissions, more than 700 students conveyed personal stories about veterans who have made a difference in their lives or hometowns. The Keystone Chapter presented the award.

John Keelan, a fourth grader at Butler Catholic School, won third prize in the National Energy Technology Laboratory’s Earth Day poster contest.

His poster was “How to Keep Our Beaches Clean.” To see his poster, visit the NETL’s website at www.netl.doe.gov.

Criteria for winning were originality, imagination and innovative ideas. Students in grades three to five participated in the contest.

Students compete in academic games

Eleven Butler area students competed in the Academic Games League of America National Tournament in Charlotte, N.C.

The local participants were Nate Cornibe and Logan Francis of Meridian Elementary School; Madison McKee of Clearfield Elementary; Cassidy Duncan of Broad Street Elementary; Chloe Paulisick of Emily Brittain Elementary; Robert Hays of Butler Junior High School; Darius Bopp, Adam Longdon and Carrie Pakozdi of Butler Intermediate; and Jacob Surkosky of St. Joseph High School.

Logan Francis and Jacob Surkosky received the highest point scores in the Butler area and qualified for Academic Excellence Scholarships from the Butler Area Parents and Educators for Gifted Students Support Group through contributions of the Butler Rotary Club and Just What The Doctor Ordered.
