Butler County's great daily newspaper

One jinx of a reporter

If you have spotted me reporting on a high school postseason event over the past few weeks, I apologize.

Your season is over and it’s all my fault.

I can’t explain it and certainly don’t intend it, but I’ve been spreading bad karma to teams all over the county.

My undeniable jinx can be linked to each and every baseball or softball playoff team forced into an early offseason.

It all started with a heavy dose of the Yellowjackets.

Freeport girls track and field had a chance for a third straight WPIAL title. South Fayette prevailed by just 10 points and owes me a thank-you card.

Freeport baseball won its first WPIAL playoff game in 15 years. I didn’t get to see the Yellowjackets celebrate, but I was perched behind the backstop for their 6-1 quarterfinal loss to undefeated Quaker Valley.

A day earlier, I watched Freeport softball give up four runs in the first inning to Greensburg Central Catholic and the ’Jackets never recovered.

Apparently Mars softall was hit with the same brand of affliction. The Planets allowed five in the first inning and lost 5-3 to West Allegheny, which worked its way to third place in the WPIAL and earned a spot in the state playoffs.

Moniteau softball was kind enough to set up a desk for me in the far corner of its dugout and conveniently in arm’s length of the concession stand. The gesture didn’t reverse the curse. The Warriors were 16-3 this season and outscored their opponents by well over 100 runs when I was safely out of sight, but lost both games I covered by a combined margin of 24-0, including a 13-0 loss to Curwensville in the D-9 semifinals.

I’m willing to bet the plague given to the Moniteau softball team was contagious and infected the baseball team, too, which fell to Karns City in the District 9 championship.

Covering the regular-season section finale between Mars and Knoch baseball was seemingly enough for both to carry my bad luck into the playoffs.

I didn’t see the Grove City or A-C Valley baseball teams play this year, but being the higher seed in their postseason matchups, I predicted both to win. Oops.

After all of this evidence, one would think spending my Memorial Day at Jack Critchfield Park for the District 10 baseball championship meant a certain loss for Slippery Rock. Mike Kilroy was writing the game story, which clearly made all the difference.

Karns City softball has been the only team to win a postseason game I have covered this spring. However, the ensuing semifinal matchup was postponed twice, before a wheel fell off Karns City’s bus on the way to Redbank Valley. You do the math.

Slippery Rock, Seneca Valley and Karns City baseball are gearing up for the state playoffs.

For the sake of their survival, I hope you don’t see me there.
