Zachary Zeigler of Zelienople, a senior in the Palumbo-Donahue School of Business, is the recipient of the Eugene P. Beard Student Award for Leadership in Ethics at Duquesne University. The award is presented annually to an undergraduate senior who is evaluated on his or her dedication to Duquesne University’s mission statement, service to others, academic achievements, leadership roles and overall presence on campus.

Zeigler is majoring in information systems management and accounting. He will graduate in May. Zeigler, served as chair of the Pittsburgh Student Government Council, which is comprised of 10 student governments.

The following students were inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi honor society: Sarah Horner of Butler, Shannon Gallagher of Butler, Lara Dorko of Zelienople, Benjamin Horner of Butler, Emiley Duespohl of Butler, Courtney Quisenberry of Mars, David Coradi of Cranberry Township and Francis Moxie Jr. of Sarver.

Sarah Francino of Renfrew was inducted into the Lambda Sigma Society at Muskingum University’s Scholarship Recognition Day ceremony held on the campus in New Concord, Ohio. She also received the David Quinn Beta Beta Beta Award for service at Muskingum. The society is a national honor society for second-year college students.

Colleen McKeag of Valencia, a student at Youngstown State University, was recognized at the annual YSU Honors Convocation for the Corydon Palmer Dental Society Awards.

Maddilyn Thoma of Knoch High School received a $4,000 scholarship from St. Francis University at the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair. She also received smaller scholarships from Duquesne University’s Bayer School of Environmental Science and Department of Biological Sciences.

Kallie Simpson, a Knoch High School senior, was awarded a $1,000 renewable academic scholarship in the Pennsylvania Association of Community Bankers’ Foundation Scholarship Program. She plans to study mathematics in college.

The Hungarian Beneficial Society of Zelienople announced Peter Mercer of Seven Fields and Ashley Blazewick of Cranberry Township as the Seneca Valley High School winners of the $1,000 Bud Ganster Memorial Scholarship awards. They will be honored at the high school’s annual Scholarship and Awards Night in May.

Out of 185 entries from three states, broadcast journalist student Josh Croup of Butler High School won the top prize in the seventh annual northwestern Pennsylvania high school journalism competition held by Edinboro University’s Communication and Media Studies Department. The award included a $1,000 Edinboro University scholarship.

He also placed first in broadcast news package and fourth in broadcast news anchor categories.

Laurel Renee Wain, a 2012 graduate of Butler High School, was accepted at the AMDA College and Conservatory of the Performing Arts in New York City and Los Angeles. She is the daughter of Barry and Robin Marcella of Butler.

Janessa Pretola, a student at Seneca Valley Intermediate High School, and Cassady Eckelberger, a student at Slippery Rock High School, are among 250 chosen as National Youth Delegates to the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment held at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., in June.
