GC's Gordon strikes out 16, homers twice

Matt Gordon had himself a day — on the mound and at the plate — for the Grove City baseball team during a 12-0 Region 6 baseball win over Conneaut on Friday afternoon.

Gordon struck out 16 and walked none during a one-hitter and launched a pair of two-run homers. He added a single and also drew two walks for the Eagles (10-2, 5-0), who broke the game open with seven runs in the final two innings.

Mars 17, Highlands 0 — The Planets (9-6, 6-1) clinched a WPIAL playoff berth with the Section 5-AAA romp.

Alex Smith homered, while Matt Eperesi, Connor McGinnis and Colin Stewart each tallied two hits apiece for Mars. Nathan Furl struck out eight and walked none in four innings of work.

The Planets will take on Hampton in a showdown for section supremacy on Monday.

JV BaseballThe Butler junior varsity baseball team defeated Fox Chapel by a 7-1 score on Friday at the Butler High School field.Connor Thomas paced the Golden Tornado with a four-hitter in a complete-game performance. He struck out eight, didn’t allow an earned run and was 2-for-3 at the plate.Mark Gross led the Butler offense with two doubles and a single, while Alex Harrison also doubled. Nick Malis and Alex Seybert each recorded a single for the Tornado.
