S. Butler starts new foundation

Board's goal is funding projects

JEFFERSON TWP — The South Butler School District moved closer Wednesday to launching a foundation that will raise funds for the district’s physical plant, including new technology.

At the school board meeting, three of its members were named to the new Knoch Knights Legacies Foundation board. They are Nelda Burd, school board president, and James Jones and Linda Rieck, board members. Six more foundation board members are being sought.

“We’re excited,” said Dale Lumley, superintendent. “The foundation will allow us to take a broader approach for seeking community support and alternative revenue for projects.”

The district was encouraged by its success last fall when it raised about $100,000 to fund its new Knoch High School Stadium scoreboard and the marquee at the intersection of Dinnerbell and Knoch roads, Lumley said.

The school board is finalizing the foundation’s bylaws, said Jason Davidek, district spokesman. A charter meeting of the board will be held later this spring, where the bylaws will be submitted for adoption, he said.

This is the district’s second foundation. The first, the South Butler County School District Foundation, provides scholarships and low-interest loans to Knoch students attending post-secondary schools.

In other business, the board agreed:

The district will have a four-day, 10-hour per day workweek from June 10 to Aug. 9

Foreman Architects of Zelienople will design improvements for the district’s weight room and the maintenance building where it is located

The district will donate $1,000 to the Saxonburg Area Girls Softball Association for field maintenance

Tri Rivers Surgical Associates of Butler, will offer student physicals during the 2013-14 school year for $20

The summer school schedule will include a recreation program for $75 per student, a summer band program for $25 per student, and a “Behind the Wheel” driver education program for $250 per student.
