Rock bested at home
SLIPPERY ROCK — East Stroudsburg coach Jeff Wilson is a big fan of the full-court press — not just in spurts, but all 40 minutes.
His team must enjoy it as well. They certainly can't argue with the results.
After falling behind 11-0 to Slippery Rock University on Friday, the Warriors chipped away, eventually taking control in the second half in an 84-72 men's basketball victory Friday at Morrow Field House.
East Stroudsburg, which entered the game as the PSAC East leader, posted 58 second-half points against The Rock, which was the PSAC West leader.
“That's our style,” Wilson said. “We press for 40 minutes. That's what we've done since I've been here (in his 11th year). It's not easy because that's a style you play physically and mentally.”
“They did a good job,” said Slippery Rock coach Kevin Reynolds on the Warriors. “They out-played us. They out-coached us.
“They beat us fair and square. They're the defending PSAC champions,” Reynolds added.
The Rock (9-3, 6-2) raced out to that early lead, grabbing defensive rebounds on the first four Warriors shots and added a couple of blocks in that span.
Devin Taylor, who led the team with 20 points and 11 rebounds, fueled the run with six points.
“By no means was that the game plan,” Wilson said. “Give Slippery Rock credit. Coming out, they were crisper. They hit us with a shot. We were not good early.”
With SRU holding a 14-3 lead five minutes into the game, ESU (10-2, 7-1) responded with a 7-0 run that dented the deficit to four with 12:45 left in the first half.
SRU would bump the lead back to eight points on four occasions in the half, the last time at 32-24 with one minute remaining.
The Warriors' Matt Tobin sank two free throws just before halftime, then the team came out much sharper than the first as Duane Johnson and Whis Grant opened with baskets to make it a 32-30 game.
Tabari Perry would answer with three free throws for The Rock, but ESU countered with a 9-2 run — 3-pointers by Gerald Bridges Jr. and Grant and a three-point play by Dajon Todmann, the latter which gave the Warriors their first lead of the game, 39-37, with 15:10 to play.
Taylor would sink two free throws to tie the game, but Zechariah Runkle would hit two of four free throws and Blair Ramsey one of two for a 42-39 lead, one the Warriors would never surrender.
Slippery Rock cut the deficit to one point twice, the last at 51-50, when Perry connected on a three-point play and Taylor added a putback, but the Warriors went on a 12-2 tear, capped by a Grant 3-pointer, to open up a 63-52 lead advantage with 6:18 to play.
“Fifty-eight points in the second half, that's not our defense,” Reynolds said.“They have guys coming off the bench who didn't score, but they know their roles.”
Notes: Darious Clark added 13 points, Gerald Brooks 12 points and Perry 10 points and nine rebounds for The Rock ... Grant led all scorers with 28 points while Johnson and King added 13 apiece and Tobin chipped in with 10 ... SRU will host Kutztown in another PSAC crossover game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Women's BasketballSlippery Rock 58, East Stroudsburg 46Having seen a nine-point lead in the first half evaporate, the idea of trailing 38-31 with 15 minutes remaining seemed daunting.SRU, however, went into a strong defensive stance, outscoring the Warriors 27-8 the rest of the way in the PSAC crossover victory.“There were a couple of things we worked on and that we were able to accomplish and that's exciting,” SRU coach Tanya Longo said. “We had a game plan and (ESU) switched up, so we quickly adjusted when they switched.“And, on the defensive end, if we allow a shot, make sure it's a difficult one. We got a lot of contributions. Whoever we called in, they were ready to go. We had a little different combinations,” Longo added.Freshman guard Erica Aiello sparked the comeback, coming off the bench to score on a pair of baskets, then draining a 3-pointer to give SRU (3-9, 2-6) a 40-38 lead.“She's an energy bug and she brings that,” Longo said. “She skilled and very versatile. She can run at point guard or shooting guard for us.”Megan Hardiman added a layup with 9:11 to play for a four-point SRU lead before the Warriors (4-8, 3-5) finally scored on a Jessica Martin jumper to break a 7:41 scoreless streak with 7:41 to play.D'Asia Chambers (14 points, seven rebounds), Aiello (11, five rebounds four steals), Emilee Vitez (10, eight rebounds) and Erinne Cunningham (10, four assists) led the balanced attack for The Rock while Martin led the Warriors with 11 points.SRU returns to action tonight when it hosts Kutztown at 5:30 p.m.
