SRU men coast to lopsided win, women falter

SLIPPERY ROCK — From ugly to outrageous.

Slippery Rock University split a pair of basketball games Sunday at Morrow Field House. The women dropped a 68-60 decision to second-year NAIA program Lourdes University before the men romped past Ohio University-Eastern, 122-60.

Both teams resume play Friday at Millersville, which begins a stretch of 17 consecutive games against PSAC competition to close out the regular season.

The Rock men (7-2) are tied with Indiana (Pa.) for first place in the PSAC West. Eleven SRU players scored in the first half alone Sunday, while 13 wound up scoring in all.

All 13 of The Rock’s players played between 10 and 21 minutes.

“That’s what’s good about a game like this,” Rock coach Kevin Reynolds said. “Everybody practices hard every day and this gave everyone extended time on the court to show what he can do.

“Division I teams get six or seven games like this. We only get one or two, so we have to take advantage.”

And they did.

The 122 points fell five shy of the school-record 127 scored against OU-Mansfield in 2008. SRU tallied 68 points in the first half, three shy of the school mark for a half, set Jan. 11, 1971 against Geneva.

The Rock is now 7-0 all-time against OU-Eastern (9-2), scoring 100 or more in four of those games.

“Coach Reynolds told me before the game this might be the best team he’s had here and I believe him,” Panthers coach Donnie Madzia said. “They do everything well and their bench runs pretty deep.

“We play this game because it gives our players who believe they can play at this level an idea of what it’s like. And we make some money for our program off this game.”

Gerald Brooks had 19 points and 10 rebounds in just 12 minutes of action, while Darious Clark had 19 points — hitting five treys — in 11 minutes. Devin Taylor had 18 points and eight rebounds in 15 minutes.

“Gerald (Brooks) hasn’t played in three years and was rusty in his first game (Dec. 18 vs. West Chester), but he’s in great shape and we’re glad he’s here,” Reynolds said.

Jordan Grady had 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for The Rock, which enjoyed a 77-30 rebounding edge. Kenny Moore had nine assists in the contest.

OU-Eastern started five freshmen, but is averaging 88 points per game in Ohio Regional Campus Conference play.

The Rock women (2-7) didn’t fare as well, though they got off to a solid start. Buoyed by five treys in the first nine-plus minutes, SRU had a 26-15 lead with 7:52 left in the first half.

Lourdes (4-11) rallied for a one-point edge by halftime. The lead changed hands nine times on the day and was tied on six occasions, the last at 51-51 with 8:21 remaining.

Lauren Tilden sank her third of four treys with 7:30 to play and the Gray Wolves never trailed again. The eight-point final margin was Lourdes’ biggest lead of the day.

“This is disappointing because that was a team we should have been able to compete with,” SRU women’s coach Tanya Longo said.

Lourdes’ women’s basketball program is only in its second year of existence. The team was 5-25 in its debut season and carried an eight-game losing streak into Sunday’s game.

“It’s all about effort for us right now,” Lourdes coach Zareth Gray said. “We preach to the girls that if you give maximum effort, you never know what can happen.”

Sunday marked Lourdes’ first-ever win against an opponent above NAIA level. The Gray Wolves suffered a 101-50 loss to Division I Detroit-Mercy earlier this season.

“We just hit a cold streak shooting the ball and couldn’t snap out of it,” Longo said. “We had a number of successive stops on them defensively, but you can only stop any team for so long.”

Five players scored in double figures for Lourdes. Tiffany Scott had 13 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. Tilden led the team with 14 points.

Alexas Brown paced The Rock with 18 points and six assists. Simone Aladenoye had 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while D’Asia Chambers scored 11 points and grabbed 10 boards.

Lourdes — located in Sylvania, Ohio — held a 47-40 edge in rebounding overall.

“We did a better job of getting to the hoop in the second half, once they switched to a man-to-man defense,” Longo said. “If you look at our roster, we have three seniors, three juniors, all the rest freshmen and sophomores.

“We’re inexperienced. These girls are learning together, growing together, learning to play together. I expect us to be competitive in our conference games, but we have a lot of work to do.”
