Cyclist faces charge of DUI

Passenger lost leg after crash

OAKLAND TWP — State police say an Allegheny County man was drunk earlier this year when he crashed his motorcycle, injuring a passenger so severely that one of her legs had to be amputated.

John E. Leddy, 46, of Gibsonia was charged Thursday with aggravated assault while driving under the influence, a felony, in the June 10 wreck on Route 68 in Oakland Township.

Police also charged Leddy with DUI, driving too fast for conditions, careless driving and a lane violation.

Investigators said the defendant was traveling west on Route 68 about 6 p.m. when he lost control of his 1981 Harley-Davidson Super Glide while rounding a bend.

The cycle landed on its side and sent Leddy and his passenger, 47-year-old Catherine J. Fielding of Gibsonia, sliding across the road and down an embankment, police said. Both riders were wearing helmets.

Leddy and Fielding suffered broken legs and other serious injuries, according to rescuers who assisted police in the call.

Police said the defendant while being treated at the scene admitted to emergency responders that he had been drinking before the crash, police said.

Medical helicopters flew both riders to Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. Physicians there eventually had to amputate Fielding’s leg, according to court documents.

Police said blood test results later revealed Leddy’s blood-alcohol level was 0.095 percent at the time of the crash. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.
