SV girls blank State College
Alex Bilka and Morgan Williams scored in the first and second half, respectively, as the Seneca Valley girls soccer team opened the PIAA Class AAA playoffs with a 2-0 win over State College Tuesday in a game played at Central Mountain High School in Clinton County.
SV's defense did not allow a shot on goal.
The Raiders (20-2) will play Peters Township (21-1) in the state quarterfinals Saturday at a site and time to be determined. The two teams just met in the WPIAL title game Saturday, with Peters Township claiming a 2-1 win.
Mars 5, Clearfield 0 — Sabrina Edwards netted a hat trick and Lydia Dennis added two goals to take care of the scoring as the Planets (20-1-1) dismantled the District 9 champions in a game played at North Allegheny High School.
Mars' season came to an end with a 2-0 loss to District 5 champ Bedford. The contest was played at Northern Bedford High School.The Planets finish with an overall record of 18-4-1.
Seneca Valley scored four goals in the third period to pull away from Peters Township in a 7-3 win.Chris Marziotto scored three goals and had an assist, while Andrew Gagnon scored twice and had one helper for SV.Kittanning 5, Mars 3 — Craig Mazzotta, Kyle Thomas and Trevor Tisdale scored for the Planets (2-1).Six different Planets scored during a 6-2 win over Serra Catholic on Monday.Ian Houk-Graves and Trevor Tisdale notched goals to keep the Planets tied going into the third period. Max Master scored twice in the final frame, while Craig Mazzotta and Ed Schwadron also found the back of the net as Mars pulled away for victory.Alex Stepke recorded 23 saves in net for the Planets, who outshot Serra Catholic by a 43-25 margin.
The First Baptist Christian School advanced to the Division 1 semifinals with a win over Seeds of Faith recently, but fell to Jefferson County Christian in the championship.Emily Rowland had 13 service points in the semifinal victory, while Hildi Burleigh added six aces, eight assists, four kills and one block. Kenzi Uber had six kills and four blocks.Rowland tallied 17 service points in the championship, while Burleigh and Uber chipped in four kills apiece.FBCS also placed third at the NCSAA Geneva Volleyball Tournament recently, thanks to Burleigh's 14 service points, seven aces, 11 kills, 10 assists and three blocks. Uber and Rowland recorded six kills each.
