Several teams should contend in 2012
There will be no shortage of quality boys soccer teams on the pitch this year.
Karns City made it to the PIAA Class A quarterfinals, but will have to find a way to replace Butler Eagle Boys Soccer Player of the Year Justin Ryan.
Seneca Valley reached the WPIAL Class AAAA semifinals and look to be strong again this season with leading scorer Ryan Vilella back. Mars advanced to the Class AAquarterfinals and the Planets have their own goal scoring threat returning in Spencer Posey.
A pair of District 10 teams look to be strong again.
Slippery Rock got to the District 10 title game and has some of the core from that team back on the field this season.
Grove City won 13 games by shutout and are so deep at goalkeeper that the Eagles are moving their brick wall of a stopper, Ben Lilly, to defense.

That means the Tornado will have to find people who can put the ball in the net — quickly.“We will need some players to step up and score some goals,” Mohney said. “We do have some guys who know how to play, so we’ll put a competitive team on the field for every game, though.”
Seneca ValleyCoach: George Williams, 18th yearOn the attack: Ryan Vilella (senior), Anthony Crivelli (senior), Jared Myers (junior), Liam Jackson (senior), Brandon White (senior), Alex Kifer (senior), Dylan Hoffman (junior)On the defensive: Brock Wagner (senior), Colter Cekalla (senior), Brad Hart (senior), Sean Edwards (senior), Danny Wallowicz (sophomore), Joe DeAugustino (junior), Ben McConahy (junior), Andrew Mascio (junior)In the net: Colton Smith (junior)Outlook: The Raiders are coming off a section championship and a trip to the WPIAL semifinals. MarsCoach: Chris Knauff, sixth yearOn the attack: Spencer Posey (senior), Nick Martinelli (senior), Matt White (junior)On the defensive: Logan Yeo (senior), Jesse Perfett (junior)In the net: Joe Kelly (senior)Outlook: The Planets have a new goalkeeper after exceptional stopper Garrett Gabriel graduated.Kelly, though, has been impressive in camp and Mars still has high hopes for the season.“Every year you have to fill spots. I don’t think any year is different than the next,” Knauff said.Posey returns as a legitimate scoring threat.“He’ll be the focus of most teams,” Knauff said.
KnochCoach: Malcolm Cook, second yearOn the attack: Josh Burd (senior), Ben Andrews (sophomore)On the defensive: Alex Slomer (senior)In the net: Andy Fritz (senior)Outlook: The Knights narrowly missed making the playoffs last season, but they lost six starters, including leading goal scorer James Conkin.Knoch is still trying to sort out its starting 11.
