West Chester claims PSAC baseball title

West Chester had plenty of everything left.

After losing their second-round game in the double-elimination PSAC Baseball Tournament last week at Pullman Park, the Golden Rams put together four straight wins to claim the conference title.

Included in that stretch were wins of 8-2 over Shippensburg and 10-0 over Kutztown in Saturday’s championship game.

“Every pitcher we tossed out there stepped up his game in this tournament,” West Chester coach Jad Prachniak said. “They all ate innings and got outs.

“We turned double plays when we needed them and we played pretty tight defense.”

Senior Conor Kerins earned the win in the title game, tossing five scoreless innings. He allowed Kutztown only two hits and threw 75 pitches before calling it a day.

Kerins — a freshman starter in the PSAC title game when the Rams last won the title in 2009 — had Tommy John surgery two years ago and only threw 14 innings in the regular season this spring.

He had not made an appearance in the tournament before Saturday.

“We were looking for the right spot to use him and this was it,” Prachniak said. “Conor has been on the big stage before. This wasn’t going to bother him.”

Kutztown hammered Mercyhurst, 8-1, in an elimination game earlier Saturday. The Golden Bears were hitless in the final six innings against West Chester.

Former Butler BlueSox standout and Kutztown senior first baseman Shayne Houck went 3-for-18 in the tourney and was hitless in his final three games. He is a candidate to be drafted by a major league club next month.

“If it happens, it happens. ... If it doesn’t, I’ll move on,” Houck said. “I don’t worry about that stuff anymore.

“It was fun coming back here. I got to see my host family from that year and some people I met here at the ballpark. I wish we could have won it. We put up a good fight.”

Kutztown catcher and No. 4 hitter Matt Albaugh will be playing for the BlueSox this season.

West Chester scored the game’s first four runs in the third inning without hitting a ball out of the infield. Three walks, an infield single, a squeeze bunt and two wild pitches did the damage.

Tournament MVP Josh Heyne homered, tripled, had five RBIs and scored three runs in the title game. The shortstop bats eighth in the Rams’ lineup.

Heyne hit .391 with two doubles, a triple, homer and 10 RBIs in the tournament.

“When we’re playing good baseball, we hit from top to bottom,” Prachniak said. “And we played some pretty good baseball in this tournament.”
