BlueSox roster will have plenty of pitching

You can never have enough pitching.

The Butler BlueSox will put that longtime baseball theory to the test this Prospect League season.

The team’s 2012 roster has been finalized and features 14 hurlers among its 26 players, along with five position players who can toe the rubber if necessary.

“I’ve got 19 guys I can use on the mound,” BlueSox manager Anthony Rebyanski said. “We’re going to give our pitchers plenty of rest and keep everybody healthy.”

Rebyanski plans to use a seven-man starting rotation and give pitchers seven or eight days between starts. The BlueSox begin their 60-game schedule May 29 against Chillicothe at Pullman Park.

“We’re not going to burn anybody out,” Rebyanski said.

While his staff has no one particularly overpowering, Rebyanski said that all of the pitchers can throw “in the upper 80s or lower 90s.”

The BlueSox are coming off a 25-29 season and return three position players from last season — Pitt catcher Jon Danielczyk, St. Bonaventure infielder Jason Radwan and Pitt outfielder Steve Vranka.

Radwan is hitting .310 for the Bonnies this spring with a homer and 13 RBIs. He is also 2-2 on the mound with St. Bonaventure, sporting a 4.09 earned run average and 22 strikeouts in 22 innings pitched.

Vranka is hitting .259 for the Panthers this spring.

“Bringing back three players means a lot because summer ball at this level is a matter of feeling comfortable,” Rebyanski said. “These three know our routine in Butler and they’re all quality kids.

“They’ll help the other guys settle in, as well.”

The BlueSox picked up a number of speedy outfielders and have five pitchers from Mid-American Conference schools.

They also have gotten new players from schools they’ve worked with in the past, such as Pitt, Coastal Carolina, Temple, Kutztown and St. Bonaventure.

“It’s important to us to have speed in the outfield because Pullman Park is such a spacious field,” Rebyanski said. “We’ve also built up solid working relationships with a number of college programs and that’s always a good sign.”

The BlueSox roster is always subject to change. Rebyanski said eight players from the original roster are already done for the season with injuries.

No Butler County residents are on this year’s roster. The closest players geographically are Kent State freshman pitcher Eric Dorsch and Temple freshman pitcher Adam Dian. Both are from Gibsonia.

The 26 players on the team come from nine different states.
