Wesley Claudy, an eighth- grade student at Butler Junior High School, competed March 30 at the state Geography Bee held at Penn State University.Wesley was one of 30 students who participated in the Junior High Geo Bee in January.After winning the school level bee, he took a state qualifying test and was one of the top 100 students in the state.He only missed one question during the preliminary rounds at states, but there were others who didn't miss any.Wesley is the son of Steven and Sharil Wesley of Butler.
CHERRY TWP — The Moniteau School District sent two teams of four to the State Championship of the Economics Challenge on April 12 in Harrisburg.The team of <B>Clarissa Kimmey, Tim Shearer, Jake Taciuch and Carter Miller</B> placed first in the competition defeating Lewisburg High School.The team of <B>Angela Schandelmeier, Amanda Mock, Evan Miller</B> and <B>Roman Weingartner</B> placed sixth overall.The teams qualified for the State Championship Competition by placing first and second overall at the regional tournament March 29 at Robert Morris University, defeating the seven-time champion Upper St. Claire High School.Clarissa and Tim were also both awarded prizes for perfect scores on one test.This is the first year that Moniteau participated in the event, using only their USAD Academic Decathlon materials for preparation.The team will take an online test April 24 to determine their national ranking.The top two teams in the nation are invited to New York City to compete for the National Championship.<B></B>———<B>Jeffrey Mitch</B> of Butler was awarded the Dominion Distinguished Scholar Award and the Eugene P. Beard Student Award for Ethics in Leadership from Duquesne University.The Eugene P. Beard Student Award for Ethics in Leadership was established to recognize a graduating senior who has demonstrated superior ethical leadership.The Dominion Distinguished Scholar Award is given annually to the graduating senior of Duquesne’s A.J. Palumbo School of Business Administration who best exemplifies the qualities of intellect, character and business acumen necessary for success in today’s global economy.Mitch’s involvement at the university included service chair for the Freshman Class Advisory Council, finance director for the Duquesne Program Council, president of the Residence Hall Association, director of the Senior Class Council and senator for the School of Business.Mitch is an accounting major and the son of Ray and Carol Mitch of Butler.———<B>Amanda Edwards</B> of Harrisville received the Antoinette and Michael Benenati Sr. Education Scholarship on April 15 at Lock Haven University’s annual Gerald R. Robinson Academic Honors and Foundation Awards Convocation.
