SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University hosted the 55th annual Region IX Meeting of the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science.
Zoe Reitz of Sarver won the Outstanding Junior SRU PJAS Scholarship for her project, “Which Fungi Best Biodegrades Oil?”Zoe also earned an award from the SRU Department of Biology and $200 for school science supplies.
Donald Thompson, from Butler Junior High School, won an award for junior high mathematics.
Elizabeth Haughey, from Butler Intermediate High School, won an award for senior high chemistry.
Julie Kasunic, from Butler Catholic School, won an award for junior high chemistry.———
Students from area junior and senior high schools competed in the regional History Day competition March 29 at Westminster College.The Senior Individual Exhibit winner was </B>Nataleigh Kerr from Seneca Valley School District for “Fashion Fades, Only Style Remains: Coco Chanel's Revolutionary Designs for the Modern Woman.”The Senior Individual Paper winner was <B>Daniella Ortiz</B> from Seneca Valley School District for “Thomas Starzl: Pioneer of Organ Transplantation.”The top three regional winners in each category advance to the state contest, May 4 and 5, at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg.———<B>Laura Crytzer</B> of Butler is one of 15 Baldwin-Wallace College students selected for the 2012 Summer Scholars Program from May 21 to July 13.She is sophomore at Baldwin-Wallace majoring in trombone performance.Crytzer's topic will be “The Science of Sonority,” researching how our brains interpret sounds as music, focusing on Western Style.She will collaborate with Beth Hisler of the Conservatory of Music.Crytzer is the daughter of Glenn and Lynn Crytzer and is a 2010 graduate of Butler High School.
