Knoch baseball downs Indiana
Knoch baseball coach George Bradley is partial toward total-team victories.
His Knights picked a good time to break one out Monday afternoon.
In its Section 4 opener, Knoch received clutch performances from all three facets of its game in a 5-4 win over Indiana at Pullman Park.
The effort included:
• Senior left-hander Justin Grossman pitched a complete game, striking out four and walking none. He held the Indians scoreless over the final three innings.
• Designated hitter Zach Koller drilled a three-run double to left, giving the Knights a 5-4 edge in the bottom of the fifth inning.
• First baseman Caleb Thorn made a diving catch on a sacrifice bunt attempt in Indiana's half of the sixth inning. At the time, the Indians had runners on first and second and no outs.
“We made a few mistakes out there, but the guys were there to pick each other up,” said Bradley. “I told them that if they can take this feeling through the rest of the season ... good things happen when you stick together. I think we grew up a lot today. We didn't panic.”
The Knights (2-3, 1-0) found themselves on the short end of a 4-1 score when they came to bat in the bottom of the fifth frame.
With two outs, Thorn walked to load the bases. Hunter Balliet then came to the plate, fouling off two pitches with a full count before drawing a walk to drive in Grossman with Knoch's second run.
Koller followed with what turned out to be the game-winning hit as Mac Megahan, Thorn and Balliet each crossed the plate.
“It was a curveball,” Koller said of the pitch he sent to left field off Indiana's Dan Clark. “I was just looking to get on base. Helping the team come back and win this game feels real good.”
Grossman found himself in a jam soon after taking the mound in the sixth.
He hit Clark with a pitch before Trent Ream reached on a fielder's choice, as courtesy runner P.J. Kuta was safe at second.
Ryan Creps then popped up a sacrifice bunt attempt and Thorn's diving effort kept both Indiana baserunners from advancing.
Dave Budash reached on a fielder's choice, leaving runners at first and third with two outs.
Grossman then induced Brandon Smith to ground out to end the threat.
“Our philosophy is to play small ball,” said Indiana coach Mark Morrow. “Sometimes, you leave some runs out there playing that way. That failed sacrifice bunt really hurt us.”
Grossman found the going much easier in the bottom of the seventh, retiring the Indians in order to close the game.
“I thought he was very effective today,” said Bradley of Grossman. “(Indiana) got some nice swings on him, but that's what happens when you throw strikes. He only had to throw 76, 77 pitches. Throw strikes and good things will happen.”
Clark pitched six innings for the Indians, striking out three and walking four in the loss.
Indiana (0-4, 0-1) led 2-1 when Ream, Creps and Budash managed a double, triple and single consecutively in the top of the fourth for a 4-1 edge.
Knoch's first run came in the bottom of the first inning when Grossman led off with an infield single, stole second, came to third on a flyout and scored on a wild pitch.
Grossman collected three of Knoch's six hits.
