County Hall of Fame to enshrine 7 in 2012

BUTLER TWP — The Class of 2012 for the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame has been announced.

The organization’s 47th annual induction banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. April 28 at the Butler Days Inn. The hospitality room will be open at 5 p.m.

Entering the Hall this year will be Carole Cress-Descovich, Bob Barlett, Larry Napora, Eric Hohn, Don Dombart, Martin Leo Sasse and the late Alfred “Alf” Allum.

The third legendary Butler County sports team to be honored by the Hall will be the 1995 state championship Seneca Valley baseball team. The undefeated 1950 Butler football team and state championship Karns City girls basketball team from 2000 have been honored the past two years.

• Allum was among the original founders of the Butler Area Midget Football League and served as that organization’s first president.

• Sasse is a Winfield High School graduate who owns records for basketball and baseball there.

• Dombart had 15 winning seasons during a 17-year stint as Butler High School varsity baseball coach and later served as the school’s sports equipment manager for 13 years.

• Barlett is a former Moniteau High School, Butler County Community College and Slippery Rock University basketball coach who won conference championships.

• Napora was an all-state swimmer at Butler who went on to become NAIA All-American at Westminster College.

• Hohn was a standout baseball player at Butler who went on to become team MVP at Penn State University and was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles and St. Louis Cardinals.

n Cress-Descovich was a WPIAL champion in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 400-meter relay in track and field for Mars. She became a five-time All-American in track at Frostburg State University in Maryland.

• The 1995 Seneca Valley baseball team began the year with a 3-5 section record, needing to win six of its final seven games just to qualify for the playoffs. The Raiders were coached by Dave Florie, who will speak on behalf of the team at the banquet.

Tickets for the banquet are $20 each if bought in advance. They will be $25 at the door. Tables of eight are available.

Ticket outlets include Parker’s Appliances in Chicora, Moses Jewelers at the Clearview Mall, Bill’s Beer Barn and Snack n’ Pack in Butler, Saxonburg Drug and Maddalon’s Jewelers in Zelienople.
