Butler County's great daily newspaper

True arms race in area softball

Moniteau's Holly Colosimo returns as a third-year starter on the mound for the Warriors this season.

Even as the rules change, high school softball is still all about pitching.

Several Butler County teams have that covered.

At Moniteau, senior Holly Colosimo is back to help the Warriors defend their District 9, Class AA title.

“She's going to be a third-year starter,” said Moniteau coach Dan Beebe of Colosimo. “She keeps the ball low, changes speeds and we put a good defense behind her.”

At Seneca Valley, Emily Watson returns to the circle. Last season, Watson was a big reason why the Raiders reached the WPIAL Quad-A finals.

Knoch has a pair of young pitchers to turn to in Britni Brandstetter and Codi Reed.

Brandstetter will see most of the pitching duties and may help the Knights make a return to the WPIAL playoffs after nearly missing the postseason a year ago.

“She had a shaky start last season as a freshman, but she got better and better,” said Knoch coach Tim Knappenberger. “She worked really hard.”

But perhaps the most interesting pitcher to keep an eye on this season is Lauren Downs at Karns City.

Downs missed half of her junior season because of a knee injury, but nearly led the Gremlins to the playoffs when she returned for the second half.

“She's throwing extremely well right now,” said Karns City coach Mike Simpson. “She's hitting her spots. She's stronger, faster, has better control and is moving the ball around. I'm very pleased with her.”

We even have a chip on our shoulder this season because everyone is wondering maybe last year was a fluke. There are always going to be haters and naysayers. But we have a motto: Faith, focus, finish. That's what we are going to do.”
