2 charged in rash of thefts
CENTER TWP — A rash of recent jewelry thefts from at least a half dozen rooms in a senior living facility turned out to be an inside job, investigators said.
State police have charged a woman who worked as an aide at the Newhaven Court at Clearview with breaking into the residents’ locked rooms between November and January. Suspect Tammy Lynn Edwards, 41, of Slippery Rock, allegedly gave the stolen items to her boyfriend, who sold them for cash at gold and jewelry stores, court documents said.
The couple netted nearly $8,000, police said.
Edwards is charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, theft and receiving stolen property, all felonies.
Her alleged accomplice, Jonathan K. Maker, 46, of Butler, is charged with multiple counts each of theft, conspiracy to commit theft and receiving stolen property, all felonies.
Preliminary hearings for the couple are set for Jan. 31 at the office of District Judge Lewis Stoughton in Chicora.
Edwards is in the Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail. Maker is free on $10,000 bail.
Police cracked the case after tracking one of the resident’s stolen jewelry Jan. 16 to Atlantic Gold Exchange in Butler Township.
Investigators said they learned Maker had sold those items and other allegedly stolen jewelry to that business. Troopers on Friday spoke to Edwards at Newhaven Court.
She admitted, documents said, that she “entered the various victims’ rooms over the past couple of months where she stole jewelry and cash.” Police said she no longer works at the facility.
Edwards allegedly acknowledged that she took the property to Maker, who sold them at Atlantic Gold Exchange and Don Paul Jewelers in Butler. She said she, too, on occasion sold some of the items.
