Mt. Lebanon pounds Butler boys for title

PENN HILLS — Butler went on a 12-0 run — then got run over.

Mt. Lebanon scored 39 of the game's next 48 points and rolled to a 66-33 victory Saturday night in the championship game of the Penn Hills Basketball Tip-Off Classic.

The Golden Tornado (1-1) fell behind 6-0 before reeling off 12 straight points to take a six-point lead with 7:24 left in the first half. Nate Snodgrass sank five free throws and Cody West drained a 3-pointer during the run.

“Then we got called for a charge on what could have been a block,” Butler coach Matt Clement said. “We should have been at the line shooting two with a six-point lead, instead Nate has two fouls — and the game changed.

“When you lose like this, you can't say that ultimately cost you the game, though. We didn't shoot the ball well in this tournament. We got away with it Friday night.”

Not on this night.

While the Blue Devils shot more than 50 percent from the floor — including six treys — Butler shot 20 percent and managed only eight field goals.

“Our shots went in and theirs didn't,” Mt. Lebanon coach Joey David said. “I'm sure this was just one of those nights for them. Both of these teams will probably be in the playoffs when it's all done.”

Mt. Lebanon (2-0) reached the PIAA Class AAAA championship game last year, beating Butler (51-42) in the quarterfinal round. The Blue Devils return two starters from that team in point guard Luke Hagy and forward Tyler Roth.

Kamic Anyang is a 6-foot-3 senior forward who moved into the district from Michigan last March. He scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds Saturday despite committing his third foul with 7:42 left in the first half.

Tournament MVP Roth added 20 points for Mt. Lebanon. Anyang and Roth sank three treys each. Anyang joined Roth on the all-tournament team.

“I didn't know a thing about Kamic until I saw him play over the summer,” David said. “He should keep getting better as he continues to get adjusted to our system.”

Butler trailed by 10 (29-19) at halftime, but failed to sink a field goal in the third quarter as Mt. Lebanon put the game away. The Tornado missed their first 15 shots of the second half, in fact, before West canned a layup with 5:32 left in the game.

By that time, Butler trailed, 55-21.

Snodgrass scored nine points before fouling out with 6:54 remaining. Zach Neudorfer came off the bench to sink three treys in the fourth quarter for the Tornado.

“Besides Neudorfer's three shots, we were 5-for-39 from 3-point range in this tournament,” Clement said. “Mt. Lebanon just clogged up the middle and let us shoot from outside. We didn't get it done from out there.

“Get outrebounded by 14 and don't hit anything from outside? That spells disaster. And that's what this was, a disaster.”

Mt. Lebanon had a 35-21 edge in rebounding. Troy Apke grabbed seven boards and Hagy six. David Tompkins paced Butler with five.

“We're going to find out what we're made of now. We'll see how we respond to this,” Clement said.

Snodgrass made the all-tournament team for Butler, joining Penn Hills' Shy Faulkner and Kiski Area's Nick Stone.

Faulkner's layup with 3 seconds left gave Penn Hills a 61-59 win over Kiski Area in the consolation game.
