Aliquippa equipped with big-game experience
A Moniteau preview will appear in Thursday's edition.ALIQUIPPA — Aiming at a trip to Heinz Field for the WPIAL championship game is a lofty goal for most football programs.Aliquippa isn't one of them. For the Quips, it's simply been the standard.Aliquippa has played in the WPIAL Class AA title game for the past four years, winning two of them, including a 14-7 thriller over Jeannette on Saturday.Moniteau (12-0) will present the Quips (13-0) with their next challenge on Friday in the PIAA Class AA quarterfinals. Kickoff at Clarion University is slated for 7 p.m.Saturday marked the 14th WPIAL crown for Aliquippa, which has appeared in 22 WPIAL championships overall. How have the Quips — currently ranked No. 1 in the state by The Patriot-News of Harrisburg — managed to maintain the consistent success?Aliquippa coach Mike Zmijanac says don't point the finger at him.“It's the program. We're not all that smart or anything,” said Zmijanac with a chuckle. “The kids buy into what we teach, they practice hard and play hard.”The hard work has paid off so far and Aliquippa will look to add to its accolades at the expense of Moniteau on Friday.Zmijanac isn't very familiar with the Warriors, but believes they're plenty capable of challenging his team.“I know close to nothing about them. But from what I've seen on film, they look pretty good, especially that quarterback,” said Zmijanac of Moniteau. “And I'll tell you what, you don't get to be 12-0 for no reason.”With the two unbeatens ready to clash, Zmijanac is well aware how unpredictable the game of football can be. There are no second chances at this stage of the season.“The truth of the matter is that it's not a best of seven. It's just one game, so you better be ready to play,” Zmijanac explained. “It's one game and you'll get everyone's best shot. Anything can happen.”On offense, Aliquippa will lean on senior quarterback Mikal Hall and sophomore running back Dravon Henry.Henry leads the Quips with 1,277 rushing yards and 13 scores on 170 carries.Hall has completed 73-of-131 passing attempts for 1,448 yards and 18 touchdowns. In last week's WPIAL title triumph, Aliquippa trailed 7-6 with a little over 3 minutes to play, but Hall led the Quips on a 96-yard drive in a span of 2:32, capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass to Devon Walker with 29 seconds left.Aliquippa has played in its fair share of big games over the years, but Zmijanac doesn't expect the experience to help his Quips on Friday.“It's totally irrelevant. It's a new team, new kids. ... We start over every year,” he said. “We're starting five sophomores, so how much experience can we really have?”However, Zmijanac couldn't deny the Quips demonstrated characteristics of a battle-tested, high-caliber team during Friday's comeback.“I'll give them that,” he conceded. “I'm very proud of them and the way they played. A lot of teams would have packed it in.”Sometimes, it can be difficult to recover from the hangover of an emotional win.Zmijanac expects his players to be prepared for the task at hand, though, rather than satisfied with being kings of the WPIAL.“That celebration was over (Monday),” said Zmijanac. “If you think you've done enough, then don't get on the bus.”
