SV volleyball eliminated in PIAA semis
It wasn't the end result Karen Martini was hoping for, but she'll take the effort she witnessed any day.
Seneca Valley's girls volleyball coach watched her team drop a 3-0 decision to Hempfield (District 3) in Saturday's Class AAA state semifinals at Central York High School.
The Raiders' season ended with scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-23.
“We went back and forth with each other in that first game,” Martini said, “but Hempfield took control late on a couple of key plays. It was very tough losing that first game.”
A controversial call in the third set hastened SV's defeat.
“Hempfield played a ball that hit the down-referee in the shin and the ball was called out,” said Martini, “but the up-referee overruled the call and said that the ball had hit off one of our players and Hempfield was awarded the point.
“None of our players were even close to that ball, it was very obvious to everyone,” she added. “I really feel had we won that set, it would've gone to a fifth set. It was just really frustrating to deal with.”
Despite the defeat, SV turned in a memorable campaign, which included a WPIAL title.
“At states, the teams are so talented,” Martini said. “To place third in the state, I can't complain. We played every single point and played with so much heart.”
Hempfield lost to Parkland 3-1 in the title game.
SV seniors Meghan Drambel (outside hitter) and Alex Karika (setter) were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
