Mars rolls to semis
INDIANA — No scouting report? No problem.
Mars girls soccer coach Blair Gerlach knew little about District 6 runner-up Forest Hills entering Saturday's PIAA Class AA quarterfinal playoff.
But the Planets assumed control early, scoring three first-half goals en route to a 4-1 victory at Indiana High School's Andy Kuzneski Field.
“Typically, when we face a team from out this way, I'm able to track down some film on them,” said Gerlach. “But we came into this game pretty much blind. I thought our speed made the difference today.”
Mars (23-0-1) will play South Park in Tuesday's state semifinals at 6 p.m. at Chartiers Valley High School. The Planets defeated South Park for the WPIAL title Nov. 5.
The Planets managed several scoring chances in the opening moments of Saturday's game, but it was Amber Fichter who headed in a corner kick from Mani Brueckner, giving Mars a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute of play.
Karli Paracca scored just over 5 minutes later and Crysta Ganter headed in a corner kick from Bethany Perri to make it 3-0 in the 25th minute.
“Scoring on restarts, that's been a pretty consistent thing for us all year,” said Gerlach.
Throughout the game, the Planets were the more aggressive team and it was a big reason why they outshot Forest Hills 20-1.
“A lot of teams have a habit of dropping off against us because they know the pace we're setting across the field,” Gerlach said. “That usually allows us to get to balls first and it sometimes leads to us getting fouled and getting free kicks.”
Junior midfielder Bethany Perri scored Mars' final goal in the 47th minute.
In the Planets' two state playoff games, their six goals have been scored by five different players.
“I trust anyone on the team with putting in a rebound,” said Paracca, a sophomore forward who has tallied 20-plus goals this year. “We can all score and I think that's one of the reasons why we've had such a great season.”
The Rangers avoided being shut out when Briana Kostan scored in the 72nd minute.
Mars goalkeeper Sarah Dailey stopped one shot in the first half.
The Rangers started goalkeeper Megan Ross, who saved 12 of the 16 shots she faced. Marlee Zubek entered the game late and tallied four saves.
For Forest Hills (20-2), the loss was just its second of the season.
“We were 2-16 just three years ago,” said Rangers coach Donna Gallaher. “We started to turn things around. This year's record was a bit of a surprise, but we have some girls who really stepped up.”
