Evelyn Alice Pereboom Brunken

Evelyn Alice Pereboom Brunken of Sallisaw, Okla., died Sunday after a short illness.

She was born June 7, 1911, in Covington, Okla., to Lena Johnson Pereboom and William J. Pereboom.

Evelyn was married to Alvin William Brunken, Aug. 2, 1935, in Lahoma, Okla. They had five sons, Alan (Muhrizah) of Stillwater, Okla., Glen (Cynthia) of Slippery Rock, Jere (Eva) of South Bloomingville, Ohio, Dean (Kathy) of Edmond, Okla., and Gary of Wichita, Kan. Additionally, she had six grand children and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Brunken was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin, in 1996; her parents; three brothers, Everett, Orville and Erwin; and two sisters, Viola Rauh and Lucille Hildenbrand.

She is survived by her five sons and two sisters, Mrs. Art (Ruth) Krienke of Lahoma, Okla., and Mrs. Verda Wedel of Enid, Okla.

After graduating from Lahoma High School, Lahoma, Okla., in 1929, she attended Central State Teachers College, Edmond, Okla., receiving her permanent teaching certificate.

After graduation, she taught in several one-room schools in north central Oklahoma including Turkey Creek School west of Enid, which was moved to the grounds of the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center in Enid as a permanent part of that facility. In the spring of 2011, at the grand opening of the center's new museum building, Evelyn was honored as the oldest living Turkey Creek teacher.

After Mr. Brunken retired, following many years with the Borden Milk Co., in Oklahoma City, the couple moved to East Lake Hills Estates, a residential community north of Vian, Okla.

Mrs. Brunken was a talented and skilled quilter. She won numerous prizes with her quilts at state fairs including Best Of Show one year at the Tulsa State Fair as well as other prizes and awards at the Oklahoma State Fair in Oklahoma City and at many Sequoyah County fairs. In 1998, she took part in a three-person show with her son, Glen Brunken, professor of art at Slippery Rock University, and her grandson, Bill Brunken an artist, in which she exhibited her quilts and they exhibited their art works in Slippery Rock University's Gault Gallery. One of her quilts was exhibited at Oklahoma State University's Gardener Art Gallery. Two of her quilts are on permanent display in Oklahoma State University's, Curriculum Materials Library.

She and Alvin were founding members and for 34 years were deeply involved with the Trinity Lutheran Church, Sallisaw, Okla.

<B>BRUNKEN</B> — A memorial service for Evelyn Alice Pereboom Brunken, who died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, at which Evelyn’s friends in the Sallisaw community can celebrate her life will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Sallisaw, Okla. The Rev. Kory Boster will officiate. A burial service, officiated by the Rev. Frank Kinast, will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Oklahoma City, at which her friends in the Oklahoma City community can celebrate her life.In lieu of flowers, individuals wishing to make a donation in her name should do so to the charity or organization of their choice or to Trinity Lutheran Church, HC 61 Box 50, Sallisaw, OK 74955.<B>Strode Funeral Home </B>is in charge of arrangements.
