Tables turned on SV
WEST VIEW — The Seneca Valley football team's recent five-game winning streak was made possible by solid execution on both sides of the ball.
The tables were turned on the Raiders Friday night.
North Allegheny turned a pair of SV turnovers into touchdowns and junior Alex DeCiantis rushed to paydirt three times as the Tigers ended the Raiders' season with a 35-10 win in a WPIAL Quad-A quarterfinal at North Hills' Martorelli Stadium.
“At some point, we've got to prove that NA isn't 25 points better than us,” said Raiders coach Don Holl. “I look up at the scoreboard and think, ‘We're better than this.'”
Trailing 21-10 at halftime, SV opened the third quarter by moving 34 yards in five plays down to NA's 31. But on a third-and-12 play, Jordan Brown's pass was intercepted at the 17 by Elijah Zeise, who returned the ball 44 yards into SV territory.
Three plays later, DeCiantis broke free for a 26-yard run, then capped the short drive with a 4-yard scoring jaunt, his third of the game.
The Raiders (8-3) ventured deep into Tigers' territory on their next drive, but turned the ball over on downs.
SV would not cross midfield again.
“We didn't finish series on either side of the ball,” said Holl. “That starts with me.”
The Raiders, who posted more points this year in the regular season (318) than any team in school history, were held to 243 yards of offense.
“Seneca Valley runs a lot of safe stuff with those underneath screens,” said NA coach Art Walker, Jr. “But our guys had a great understanding of what they needed to do on defense.”
SV found itself behind the 8-ball early.
DeCiantis finished a 12-play, 83-yard drive with a 3-yard scoring run.
Then, on SV's first play from scrimmage, Brendan Coniker picked off Brown's pass and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown with just 5:30 off the first-quarter clock.
“It was 14-0 before you could blink,” said Holl. “But I thought we ended up moving the ball well for the rest of the first half.”
The Raiders scored the next 10 points — a 3-yard rushing touchdown from Forrest Barnes and a 30-yard field goal from Michael Denny — to cut the Tigers' lead to 14-10.
Troy Witt contributed to both scoring drives with receptions of 35 and 26 yards, respectively, from Brown.
Another DeCiantis score pushed NA's lead to 21-10 at intermission.
NA's defense held Barnes to 7 yards on his eight touches in the first half.
“If you take away Brown and the passing game, Barnes is going to burn you,” said Walker. “Last week, he had over 200 yards and he did it multiple ways.
“Our No. 1 goal was to stop Barnes and then worry about keeping Brown in the pocket,” he added.
“NA is a physical team,” said Holl. “But they had a very simple game plan and used the same front on defense the whole game.
“Where their offense gets going is when you can't stay on the field on offense,” he added.
The 2011 season was one of achievement for the Raiders, who reached eight total wins and played in the district quarterfinals for the first time in nine years.
“I'm disappointed for our players, our seniors,” said Holl, “but when the dust settles, we're going to look back and see that we took a big step forward.”
NA (11-0) will face Gateway (9-2) in the semifinals.
