Toy, KC run wild against Clarion
CLARION — Glenn Toy is in playoff form.
The Karns City junior running back rushed for 218 yards and five touchdowns as the Gremlins held off a late Clarion rally for a 46-28 win in the regular-season finale for both teams Friday night at Clarion University.
Toy had 189 yards and four touchdowns in the first half.
“He's just a tremendous back,” said Karns City coach Ed Conto. “He's really great. I just think he's tough.”
Toy ran wild against a Clarion defense that ranked among the best in the entire District 9.
The Bobcats (6-4) had given up just 11 points per game this season and were very stout against the run.
“We were playing too aggressive and taking ourselves out of the play too many times in the first half,” said Clarion coach Larry Wiser. “Toy is a very good back, not just his speed, but he broke a number of tackles tonight. He is quite impressive.”
Largely because of Toy, Karns City wracked up 319 yards rushing in the first half and scored on all five of its possessions.
Toy scored on runs of 18, 71, 6 and 9 in the first two quarters as the Gremlins built a 32-20 lead.
The Karns City defense, though, also struggled.
“Our offense played very well. Our defense — we were just totally out of whack,” Conto said. “The second half, we went back to basics and did some basic stuff and we got better.”
So did Clarion and the results were evident. After the two teams combined for nearly 500 yards and 24 first downs in the first 24 minutes, both teams were scoreless in the third quarter.
As impressive as Karns City was on offense, Clarion still had a chance in the second half.
T.J. Armstrong, who led the Bobcats with 116 yards rushing, scored on a 9-yard run early in the fourth quarter to cut the Karns City lead to 32-28.
The Bobcats forced a Gremlin punt, but muffed it, setting Karns City up at the Clarion 13.
On the first play, Alex Kinkela barreled in for a score — his second of the game — and the Gremlins had breathing room again.
Kinkela finished with 101 yards for Karns City, which rushed for 441 yards in the game.
The Gremlins were beat up heading into the game, missing several starters on defense and on the offensive line.
“I was very concerned about this game, but the kids pulled through,” Conto said. “They did a nice job pulling together.”
Both Karns City and Clarion will move on to the playoffs next week.
The Gremlins will play Brookville, who they beat at home 24-21 in Week 7, Saturday at Clarion University at a time to be determined.
Conto said he hoped to be healthier next week.
“It's the typical end-of-the-year stuff,” Conto said. “Kids are beat up and you don't know what you are going to get. That's high school football. It's just sad it happens at the end of the year for them.”
