Union intercepts 9
RIMERSBURG — Union owns a potent offense, but it wasn't needed on Thursday.
The defense scored more than enough.
The Golden Knights forced 10 turnovers — including nine interceptions — and tallied five defensive touchdowns en route to a 60-21 thrashing of Sheffield at Union High School.
“Our offense didn't even have to do anything tonight,” said Union senior Brody Pollock, who intercepted three passes. “Everything we picked off, we almost took it to the end zone.”
“We're checking to see if that's a school record (for turnovers), including the defensive touchdowns,” said Union coach Dave Louder. “We talked last year about making history with this team, being part of history.
“Last week, we became the first (Union) team to be in the playoffs,” Louder continued. “I told the guys after the game, ‘That could be another notch in the belt, fellas — something you'll never, ever forget about.'”
The Wolverines (4-6) could use a case of amnesia.
Union (7-3) picked off the first three Sheffield passes, the second of which was returned 34 yards for a score by Brody Shick to give the Knights a 6-0 lead.
The junior added a 54-yard interception return for a score in the third quarter.
“It feels good to do it for our team. We're just making big plays,” said Shick. “I just start looking for lead blockers, making cutbacks and just try to get to the end zone. We practice that. ... It paid off tonight.”
No doubt about that.
Mikey Harris set up Union's second score with the third pick of the night and returned it 32 yards to the Sheffield 25. Five plays later, Austin Davis plowed into the end zone from 1 yard away.
Sheffield's fourth possession was the first that didn't end with an interception, but Jake Gezik blocked the punt. The Knights cashed in on the next play from scrimmage on a 39-yard aerial strike down the left sideline from Taylor Smith to Pollock.
The Wolverines cut the gap to 18-7 after a 4-yard rushing touchdown by George Fitch with 1:40 to go in the first quarter. However, Union quickly answered and put the game out of reach.
Smith hit Kaden McGregor on a tight end screen up the middle and the junior raced 49 yards for a score just 22 seconds after the Sheffield touchdown.
Two plays later, McGregor stepped in front of a short pass and took it 55 yards to the end zone to give Union a 32-7 cushion.
“Their defense I'm sure had more yardage than their offense did, there's no doubt about it. Our turnovers also gave them a short field to score on,” said Sheffield coach Bryan Gould. “Turn the ball over 10 times, and we're not going to beat anybody.”
Pollock's three interceptions all came in the first half, bringing his team-leading season total to nine. The senior returned his second pick 74 yards to set up the Knights on the Sheffield 18-yard line.
“We have a lot of speed,” said Pollock. “Whenever we get it into our hands, we try to get into the end zone.”
Union scored four plays later on a 1-yard plunge from Harris.
Smith capped the first-half scoring with 44 seconds left in the second quarter on a 41-yard fumble return.
“It was amazing. Everybody is ready for the playoffs,” said Smith. “We're on a four-game win streak now. All of the momentum we get from the wins before, just carries into the next game. We just have to keep it going.”
Shick's 54-yard return pushed Union's advantage to 53-13 with 7:48 to go in the third quarter.
On the very next play from scrimmage, Darren Seary snagged a Sheffield pass and sprinted 42 yards to the end zone.
The ninth and final interception was hauled in by a diving Brandon Tyson off a deflection.
“I couldn't believe that the defense took the ball away that much,” said Louder.
Sheffield's Nick Bonavita and Kalil Slaughter reeled in TD passes from Shequan Wright to round out the Wolverines' scoring.
Wright threw six interceptions, after Ike Nearing tossed the first three.
“It was mistakes on our end the whole way,” said Gould. “I think we got turnovers out of our system. We're good for a couple weeks now.”
Sheffield will play unbeaten Moniteau in the first round of the District 9 Class AA playoffs.
Union will square off with either Brockway (7-2) or Port Allegany (8-1) to open the District 9 Class A postseason.
