Seneca Valley sweeps to semis
ROSS TWP — This was just one step along a path the Seneca Valley girls volleyball team hopes ends with a WPIAL Class AAA title.
“We’re tired of silver,” said senior middle hitter Cate Seman. “We striving for gold and we’re not going settle until we have it.”
The latest obstacle on that march was a relatively easy one to hurdle Tuesday night at North Hills. The Raiders dominated Baldwin at the net and rolled to a 25-10, 25-13, 25-22 victory in the WPIAL quarterfinals.
But there was no celebration after a win that featured six Seneca Valley players with multiple kills.
The Raiders have an eye on a bigger prize.
Last year, Seneca Valley lost to Pine-Richland in the WPIAL finals, then made a deep state playoff run, but fell short of a state title, too.
“They are very hungry,” said Seneca Valley coach Karen Martini. “(We’ve) been (in the quarterfinals) four times. They are just driven to do it. It’s in their hearts to do it.”
Seman had nine kills, senior Meghan Drambel seven kills and senior Emma Carter was a force at the net with a slew of blocks.
If the Raiders had one weakness against Baldwin it was with their serve.
Seneca Valley had nine service errors.
“We’re usual a very strong serving team,” Martini said. “They’ll hear about it tomorrow in practice.”
The Raiders are hoping to hear a lot from Martini for a lot more practices to come.
“They want another full week after (the WPIAL playoffs),” Martini said. “They haven’t had enough of me yet.”
Seneca Valley is a very deep team and showcased that depth against Baldwin.
Martini, who had been known to tinker with her personnel at times, changed her lineup five minutes before the match.
“It made things interesting,” Seman said. “It’s a really good thing with this team that we’re experienced enough to do it.
“We understand the game enough that she can just tell us, ‘Flip it. Go someplace else.’ You don’t see that very often on other teams.”
Seneca Valley will play Mt. Lebanon in the semifinals Thursday at a site and time to be determined.
West Allegheny 3, Knoch 1 — Selina Sanks was dominant for the Knights.West Allegheny, though, had several players assert themselves in a 25-14, 19-25, 25-22, 25-21 win over Knoch in the WPIAL Class AA quarterfinals at North Hills.Sanks had 19 kills in the match and helped Knoch rally from a 16-11 deficit in Game 2 for a six-point win that briefly turned the momentum in the Knights’ favor. But West Allegheny was able to use a trio of standouts at the net in Jaclyn Placha, Morgan Seybold and Barb Lesko, who combined for 34 kills.Several of those kills were tapped over the net into spaces between Knoch players.“When you have hitters like that who swing full out, full out, full out and then at the last minute can go up and tip, that’s a good strategy and hard to stop,” said Knoch coach Diane Geist. “I thought we did a good job on defense to make them do that to begin with.”Knoch rolled off 10 straight points in the second game after a timeout and appeared poised to challenge West Allegheny.“I have absolutely no idea what I said to them in that timeout,” Geist said, laughing. “We have a good leader in our setter, Stephanie Gross, and a couple of times she took over the huddle and said the right things to fire the team up when they needed to be fired up and to calm the team down when they needed to be calmed down. I give her a lot of the credit.”But West Allegheny rallied from a 12-6 deficit to start Game 3 for a narrow three-point win and then closed Knoch out in the decisive game.West Allegheny will play Freeport, a 3-2 winner over Mars, in the semifinals Thursday at a site and time to be determined.
