Harriet A. Walter
Harriet A. Walter, 89, of Valencia died peacefully Saturday morning at her home after an extended illness.
Born in Pittsburgh, Sept. 5, 1922, she was the daughter of Andrew G. Walter Sr., and Harriet J. Coombs Walter, who are deceased.
Harriet graduated from Mars High School in 1939. She was a great cook, hard worker and devoted to her family and friends. She always had a book in her hand and enjoyed watching “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy” on television.
During World War II, Harriet worked at Callery Chemical, assembling gas masks, and at Allis Chalmers. From the 1940s to the 1960s, she worked with her family at Walter’s grocery/gas station and dance hall at Route 228 West and Three Degree Road.
Harriet clerked at Zeiglers Hardware/Ben Franklin Five and Dime, McGeever’s in Mars, and helped to run Lake Arthur Family Campground in Slippery Rock.
She was a lifelong member of the Valencia Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Women’s Association, the choir, and the Laura S. Dickson Bible Class. She volunteered at the Mars Public Library, St. Barnabas Nursing Home and the Mars Home for Youth.
Although never married, she helped to raise and was a loving example to her nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces.
Harriet is survived by her loving brother, Andrew G. Walter Jr.; two nephews, Harley Walter and Edward (Becky) Walter; two nieces, Sharon (Al) Gatz and Gail Walter; and 12 great nephews and nieces.
Harriet was preceded in death by her twin sister, Margaret Walter; her brother, Harley Walter, her nephew, Dean Walter, and Idell Waters Hunt, who was like a second mother to her.
WALTER — Friends of Harriet A. Walter, who died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, will be received at the
MCDONALD-AEBERLI FUNERAL HOME, INC., 238 Crowe Ave., Mars, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 10:30 a.m. Tuesday until the 11 a.m. service at the funeral home with the Rev. Gary Weston and the Rev. William Jackson, co-officiating. Burial will be in the Allegheny County Memorial Park, McCandless Township.
