Let the footballs fly

JACKSON TWP — Fans attending Friday night's football game between Seneca Valley and McKeesport may witness an air show along with a football game.

Through three games, Raiders' quarterback Jordan Brown (676 yards and seven touchdowns) and McKeesport's Eddie Stockett (669 yards, six scores) have scorched opposing defenses.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at NexTier Stadium.

Seneca Valley suffered a 43-29 defeat at McDowell last week, but the contest was another step forward in Brown's development, completing 24 passes for 305 yards, both career highs.

In an offense designed to spread the ball around, Brown has done just that, hitting 10 different targets so far in 2011. He will make his ninth varsity start Friday.

“The number one thing we tell our guys is let the game come to them,” said SV coach Don Holl. “You can't get impatient. There are times when Jordan has to make a play with his feet and he's done that. He continues to develop his confidence and skills. He's becoming a complete quarterback.”

Through three games, the Raiders (2-1) are averaging 437 yards of offense per outing.

The unit is playing with confidence and is capable of scoring from any distance, evidenced by its three touchdowns from more than 60 yards out.

Holl said the entire playbook is open no matter the defense the Raiders line up against.

“Sometimes you just have to tip your cap to an opposing defense for making a play,” said Holl. “But this is what we do. We try and out-execute you.”

“They have a philosophy on offense and abide by it,” said McKeesport coach Jim Ward. “Coach Holl does a great job of utilizing all of the weapons they have.”

Holl expects to see a heavy dose of a 4-3 defense from McKeesport.

“The last two games they played (Altoona and Connellsville), they went up against Wing-T offenses,” said Holl. “We saw some things they showed on film that we won't see (Friday). We should get a lot of 4-3 fronts from them.”

Last week, McKeesport (3-0) won 58-21 at Connellsville. The Tigers were ahead by a modest 28-21 score in the third quarter before reeling off 30 unanswered points to close the game.

McKeesport is under the direction of second-year head coach Jim Ward, who took over for long-time mentor George Smith in 2010.

Under Smith, the Tigers were known for running a flexbone offense, the same scheme the Raiders faced last week against McDowell. But Ward has focused his offense on multiple sets.

In the Tigers' 20-6 win over SV last season, the growing pains were evident as Stockett completed just three passes for 11 yards. But the signal caller now appears confident under center.

“He's got more experience,” said Ward. “He played in some big games for us last year and, being a year older, he's more comfortable with the expectations we have for him.”

Two beneficiaries of the improved air attack are senior wideouts Jamar Clark and Youri Whindleton, who have combined for 20 receptions this season worth 545 yards and three touchdowns.

Though Stockett has shown his ability throwing the football, the Tigers can still run as well. Senior halfback Donte Patterson has tallied 439 yards and three scores on the ground this year.
