SRU rolls to victory
SLIPPERY ROCK — Two stadiums, same result.
On a night when N.Kerr Thompson Stadium was officially renamed Mihalik-Thompson Stadium at halftime Saturday, Slippery Rock University rolled to a 54-0 football victory over Cheyney.
The Rock took a 23-0 lead into intermission as holder Mike Bongivengo rambled 10 yards for a score on a fake field goal attempt on the final play of the second quarter.
“We wanted the final play in N.Kerr Thompson Stadium to be a unique memory,” Rock coach George Mihalik said. “There was one second left on the clock when we trotted the field goal unit out there.
“That was the time.”
It was that kind of night for The Rock.
After its first two possessions ended in punts, SRU (2-0) scored on eight of its next nine possessions. Mixed in there was a punt block in the end zone that redshirt freshman Isaiah Coleman recovered for a touchdown.
“We didn't have a punt block on there,” Mihalik pointed out. “We were set up for a return. Their punter bobbled the snap and our guys got in there.”
SRU wasn't trying to run up the score. It just happened that way.
Geron James turned a 3-yard hitch into a 74-yard touchdown play and Jimmy Zubik took a handoff and scampered 70 yards for a score during the fourth quarter.
The rout happened after a scoreless first quarter.
“We came out and held our own,” interim Cheyney head coach Kenneth Lockard said. “We tensed up after they scored the first touchdown. We started being too cautious.
“Our team never trailed last week (21-19 win over Lincoln) and we let things get away ... and Akeem Satterfield is an outstanding running back.”
Satterfield had eight carries for 119 yards and three TDs. Cody Endres threw for 241 yards and a touchdown.
“We're a momentum offense,” Endres said. “Once we get started and find our rhythm, we can be hard to stop.”
Defensively, The Rock limited Cheyney (1-1) to 104 net yards. SRU had five quarterback sacks and Brandon Watters had an interception in the end zone to thwart one of three Cheyney scoring threats in the fourth quarter.
Tyler Wilkinson missed a 39-yard field goal try and the Wolves turned the ball over on downs at SRU's 13 with 1:54 to play and The Rock reserve unit on the field.
“I was more nervous watching those guys than while I was playing,” middle linebacker Zach Sheridan said. “We really wanted that goose-egg.
“We want to be the best defense in the country and shutouts are hard to come by. Our coaches put us in the matchups we needed to shut down their option attack.”
The Rock rolled up 488 yards of offense and has scored 105 points in two games.
“From the second quarter on, their execution was near perfect offensively,” Lockard said. “That was impressive.”
“Cheyney was a confident team coming in here, but I felt the game would turn our way once we got that first score,” Mihalik said. “We really took control after that.”
