Man faces assault, restraint charges
Butler police arrested a city man Thursday morning after he allegedly attacked his girlfriend and refused to let her leave their apartment.
William J. Smith III, 31, who is charged with aggravated assault and unlawful restraint, is being held in the Butler County Prison on $25,000 bail.
Officers about 5:40 p.m. showed up at Smith’s apartment in the 300 block of Center Avenue, following a report that the defendant was assaulting 40-year-old Michelle Kaiser.
When no one answered the door, police said they had to force their way inside. Officers found a sofa chair pushed up against the door and a wooden chair against the bedroom door.
The couple were in the bedroom, police said. Kaiser was bleeding from the forehead.
She told officers that she and Smith had been fighting recently and that she “has not been allowed to leave the apartment for about two days, unless with William,” a police affidavit said.
Kaiser said Smith struck her with a glass container holding a candle, and choked her with a belt.
Police said Kaiser had a cut to the head above her left eye and a bump above her right eye. She was treated at Butler Memorial Hospital for the injuries and released.
A preliminary hearing for Smith is set for 1:15 p.m. Monday.
