This is part of a summer series of Q&A features profiling Butler County area sports personalities.CHICORA — Tyler Kepple grew up surrounded by athletes. His elder sister, Allyson, was a four-sport star at Karns City High School. His elder brother, Zach, also played four sports at the school.Tyler, 15, is following in their footsteps. Entering his sophomore year at Karns City, he is in a competition for the starting quarterback spot for the Gremlins this fall, came off the bench last winter for the basketball team and also played baseball and contributed in the 400-meter relay and the jumps for the track and field team.Even his 12-year-old younger brother, Noah, is getting into the multi-sport act.“It’s kind of the way we were brought up,” Tyler Kepple says of his family’s penchant for dabbling in multiple sports.
What’s it like living in a family full of multi-sport athletes? It’s fun. When we play anything, any sport, we’re all competitive. We all want to win. ... I just want to be successful.
So, when you and your sister play one-on-one, who wins?Well, it depends on the day. But I think my height gives me a little edge.
You have a chance to be the starting quarterback for Karns City this season. What would it mean to you to win that job?I think that would be pretty awesome. I don’t know too many sophomores who have started at quarterback at Karns City over the years.Right now it’s up in the air. It’s between (senior) Brady (Ellenberger) and me right now. We’re alternating snaps.
What has been the dynamic between you and Brady? He’s been great. Any time he sees me doing something wrong, he’ll step in and make sure I do it right.
When you get older and get closer to graduating high school and going to college, how are you going to narrow down the sports you play to one or maybe two?I don’t know. It’s going to be hard because I like all the sports I play. It’s going to be different. I guess I’ll decide by how successful I am at each.
Is there any sports that Karns City doesn’t have that you would like to play? Not really. (Pauses) Maybe lacrosse. I always wanted to play lacrosse. I used to actually play soccer before I got to high school, but I gave that up.
Playing all those sports, that doesn’t leave much time for anything else, does it?No, it doesn’t. School comes first, though. When I get home, I’ll eat dinner and then do homework. ... I like to hang out with my friends. This summer, though, I’ve worked at a golf course (St. Jude), so I’ve started to take up golf. I’m still learning.
How long have you played golf?About a month or two. I’m not very good.
What do you typically shoot for nine holes?Probably mid-40s.
That’s not good?(Laughs) Well, sometimes I’m in the low 50s.
Do you ever sit back and feel thankful for the natural ability you have been blessed with that allows you to do so well in so many sports?Yes, I do. I feel that way a lot, actually. I push myself to get better, but I know I have a lot of natural ability to start with. I don’t want to waste it.
Other than the usual answers like doing well and winning, what do you enjoy most about sports?Staying active. I like to be active.
