Elevators at the Cliffside Apartments, 225 S. McKean St., are back in service after the control panel burned up July 28.

The two elevators were back in service Tuesday evening.

“We think it was a lightning strike,” Perry O'Malley, executive director of the Butler County housing authority, said of the cause of the elevator outage.

He said several residents told him they heard a loud boom shortly before the elevators stopped working. An elevator repair person said the control panel was incinerated.

No lightning strike was reported to the Butler Fire Department probably because there was no fire or damage to the building, O'Malley said.

“We probably get hit by lightning a dozen times a year,” he said, referring to all the housing authority's properties.

The elevators were out of service for several days in the seven-story building, which has 82 units.
