BOCA RATON, Fla. — Former Butler businessman Arthur Jaffe received an honorary doctoral degree of humane letters from the Florida Atlantic University for his work as founder of the university's book arts center.
Jaffe, 90, was co-owner of the former Jaffe's clothing store on Main Street.
He has served as founder and curator of the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts in the FAU Wimberly Library, which began with the Jaffe's donation of 2,800 artists books in 1998.
The 4,800-square-foot center has been developed into a cultural center that houses 12,000 rare books and serves as a venue for concerts, film screenings, exhibitions, workshops and classes.
Jaffe volunteered at the library for four years before making the book donation.
A 2007 expansion of the library was paid for through a gift left to the university by the late Mata Jaffe.
Arthur Jaffe also served as the Ario S. Hyams Professor, an endowed position in the university's libraries until 2010.
He received his honorary degree May 6 at commencement.
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Burt Hill has been awarded the grand prize for outstanding educational facility design in the 20th anniversary spring 2011 edition of Learning By Design.Learning By Design is a biannual guide that showcases school and university design and construction projects.Burt Hill, a Stantec company based in Butler, received the award for the Springfield (Pa.) Literacy Center design. The library center was built in the entrance of the Springfield school. The judges said it “speaks to the mission of the literacy center.”
CRANBERRY TWP — The Westinghouse Electric Co. is talking to the Republic of Lithuania to build a nuclear plant there.The company said it will not discuss in public the details of its proposal, but said it is an important energy project for Lithuania.
WEXFORD — The Woodlands Foundation, a 32-acre retreat in Bradford Woods for children and adults with disability and chronic illness, announced the election of two new board members.• Thomas Geer is vice president of Fuel Engineering for Westinghouse Nuclear Fuel, where he oversees global fuel hardware design and technology development supporting nuclear physics, thermal hydraulic and fuel performance.• Peter Roman is the director of global accounts for Eaton Electrical, a division of which he was one of the eight founding executives. He is also the adjunct professor of marketing for the Carnegie Mellon Tepper School of Business MBA Program.
