Legality of oil well discussed

CENTER TWP — A meeting to determine the legality of an oil well drilled in the township was continued on Wednesday.

The township’s zoning hearing board will decide at a date to be determined whether an oil well drilled at 204 Aggas Road may continue operation after it was drilled outside the township’s mineral extraction overlay district.

The township has required property owner Judith Kiser to stop operations until the well is granted a zoning variance to operate outside the district.

According to township supervisor Chairman Tom Schiebel, the overlay district line runs through the property, and the well is just outside of it.

Schiebel said the mineral overlay district was implemented about five years ago, and as far as he is aware, this is the first well to use it.

“If there are other wells, they are from 50 years ago,” Schiebel said.

The overlay district ordinance covers the extraction of oil, gas, coal and limestone.
